Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Leadership Studies, Student Affairs, Higher Education or a related area
  • 5 years of full-time professional experience in higher education
  • Demonstrable experience with and knowledge of current best practices in leadership education on a college campus required.
  • Demonstrated experience with engagement and advising of students in a co-curricular university setting
  • Demonstrated experience as a classroom instructor
  • Experience with supervising and developing graduate-level and/or full-time staff members to accomplish personal and organizational goals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Community-Engaged Leadership is structured as a part of the Division of Student Affairs. The Mission of Community-Engaged Leadership is to engage students in academic, experiential, and community-oriented programs that enhance their capacity to serve and lead in socially-responsible ways for the benefit of their local and global communities. Our team recognizes that the development of the whole student is achieved through in-class learning and out-of-class experiences provided through programs designed to enhance cultural, intellectual, leadership, personal, and professional development. When afforded these opportunities for engagement and learning, students will graduate from the institution with a better understanding of themselves, their peers, and their responsibilities as part of a larger community.

Appalachian State University is seeking an energetic and visionary leader to serve as Associate Director within the Department of Community-Engaged Leadership. This role serves both as a full-time, professional staff and as adjunct faculty within the Reich College of Education. The Associate Director will direct the Leadership Studies Minor. serve as a primary instructor each semester, and provide oversight and development to instructors and teaching assistants in the minor. This position will also serve as a member of a team that seeks to intentionally interweave leadership education/programming with community engagement practices by providing experiential opportunities through data-informed practice and collaborative strategic planning; these efforts will be both direct and indirect through the supervision of a full-time staff person. This person will understand today’s college students, create space for students to engage in meaningful and purposeful dialogue, provide a developmental and educational context for campus programming and represent the office to external constituencies and stakeholders.

Duties and Responsibilities Include:
  • Direction and oversight of relevant curricular and co-curricular initiatives
  • Serve as Director of the academic Leadership Studies Minor through the Reich College of Education
  • Supervise one Assistant Director who is, in turn, responsible for local community engagement and volunteer efforts
  • Develop and nurture relationships with adjunct instructors, teaching assistants, and campus partners
  • Teach 2 classes per semester in the Leadership Studies Minor
  • Contribute to CEL department initiatives and operations including weekly meetings, annual reports, assessment, retreats, and award nominations.
  • Select, train, and supervise one Graduate Assistant; supervise graduate student Teaching Assistants and internships as needed
  • Work with the department’s director on the management of budget
  • Utilize research, theories, models, and standards in the leadership field to design robust and inclusive curriculum for curricular and co-curricular experiences
  • Integrate diverse scholarship and critical pedagogy into leadership education efforts
Suggested Salary Range
$64,000-$66,000
