Position Summary

Governors State University is seeking to hire a Career Counselor to provide guidance, direction, support and advice to GSU students and alumni in their exploration process and their job searches. The Career Counselor uses a variety of assessment instruments to identify clients aptitudes for career fields and specific jobs. After leading clients through career exploration activities, the Career Counselor helps clients develop job search skills, and assists the Director of Career Services in marketing the office’s services and resources to the GSU community and external constituents.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES :
60%
• Explore and evaluate students’ and alumni education, training, work history, interests, skills, and personality traits, and arrange for assessment and interest inventories to assist the student in making career decisions.
• Work with individuals to develop job-search skills and assist students/alumni in locating and applying for jobs and utilize Handshake for resume reviews.
• Work with students/alumni to practice interviewing skills.
• Advise students and alumni through individualized sessions for writing resumes, cover letters and building networking skills.
• Follow-up e-mail and phone contacts for resume and cover letter help.
• Prepare students to attend graduate school and write curriculum vitae, as well as choose activities that will incorporate well into their career plans.
• Provide resources and review student and alumni application materials for graduate school admissions.

• Assist in the collection of job market information such as salary surveys, hiring trends, future job outlook and current economic and market indicators.
• Work with other members of the Career Services office to increase public awareness of our services, as well as find ways to improve methods of delivery.
• Deliver presentations on current services to the students/alumni, faculty/staff, and the GSU community.
• Team with other members of the staff to design and implement additional services.
• Assist in the design and implementation of new programs sponsored by the Office of Career Services.

10%
• Serve as a liaison between the career services staff and students/alumni.
• Design website resource pages distinct to various careers and specialized populations, such as women, international, and jobseekers with disabilities, as well as resources dedicated to each academic program on campus.
• Revise all career handouts as needed by the Executive Director.
• Assist with and attend various career fairs and community sponsored activities to promote the university and assist prospective students with career choices.
• Build relationships with other academic departments as well as the admissions staff to assist students in career major decision-making.
• Partner with other departments to assist with programs, such as helping students in the Dual Degree program (career aspect) and the career assessment component in a communications class.
• Distribute/create marketing materials for all workshops and career service sponsored activities.

• Attend meetings, conferences and professional development activities both on and off campus.
• Train new members to the team about the services that are offered through the department.
• Train student workers, graduate assistants and or interns as needed.
• Perform additional duties as assigned within the scope of the classification of this position.

*Salary is commensurate with experience and education.
(This is a non-unionized position. Salary starts at the base and is determined based on Education and Experience exceeding the minimum qualifications).

Minimum Qualifications

REQUIRED : COLLEGE / UNIVERSITY TRANSCRIPTS, WHICH INCLUDES THE EARNED DEGREE AND CONFERRED DATE MUST BE ATTACHED FOR CONSIDERATION OF THIS POSITION (See “Special instructions to applicants” section below).

1. Bachelor’s Degree
2. Demonstrated skills in program development and implementation
3. Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain collaborative relationships to meet mutual goals and advising clients.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in Counseling, Education, Student Affairs or related field.
Bilingual in Spanish language.
Understanding of organization-related issues.
Computer proficiency in Windows environment appropriate to the position.
