The School of Public Service in the Strome College of Business at Old Dominion University invites applicants for an Assistant Professor position in public administration and policy. The position begins July 2023. The School of Public Service houses a NASPAA-accredited MPA program, a doctoral program in public administration and policy, a graduate certificate in public procurement and contract management, a graduate certificate in public administration, a nonprofit concentration, a multi-sector public service concentration, and an undergraduate minor in public service.

We welcome applicants with expertise from all areas of public administration and/or policy. Preference will be given to candidates whose research and/or teaching is related to public and nonprofit management, multi-sector partnerships, privatization, or contract management. The School of Public Service is committed to building expertise in the area of multi-sector partnerships, which is the intersection and interaction of the public, nonprofit, and/or business sectors.

Minimum qualifications:  

  • PhD in Public Administration or in a related field.  
  • Clearly defined, emerging research agenda in an area of public administration and/or policy. 
  • Research track record sufficient to teach graduate-level courses in the MPA and PhD programs.   
  • Clearly defined teaching philosophy and approach.

Preferred qualifications:  

  • Research expertise in some aspect of multi-sector partnerships or multi-sector public service, such as privatization, contract management, or nonprofit management. 
  • Experience teaching and mentoring students of diverse backgrounds.  
  • Experience teaching asynchronous and synchronous online courses, hybrid, and face-to-face classes.  
  • Experience teaching graduate level. 
  • Demonstrated record of community engagement.

The teaching statement should address the candidate's approach to teaching public administration and policy, as well as what courses they feel they could teach if hired. Additionally, candidates should describe their teaching online, both synchronously and asynchronously, and how they plan to connect with their students online. The statement should include specific examples of a candidate's work helping students of diverse backgrounds. Candidates should also address how they plan to build on that experience.
