To help us reach this vision, the Department of Physical Therapy and Athletic Training, in the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) is searching for a 12-month non-tenure-track faculty member at the rank of Assistant Clinical Professor.

The Doctorate in Physical Therapy (DPT) program is a key part of NAU New Economy Initiative to prepare more DPT students to stay in Arizona and work to address the health disparities in the state. For this initiative to be successful, the DPT program will partner with our community and academic partners to remove barriers and increase access to our DPT graduate program.

Job Description

The Doctor of Physical Therapy Program at Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff Mountain Campus invites applicants for a 12-month non-tenure-track faculty positions at the Assistant Clinical Professor level. Academic rank of appointment will be commensurate with qualifications and experiences as guided by existing department, CHHS and NAU promotion and tenure guidelines. The position has an anticipated start date of July 1, 2023.

We seek candidates whose professional experience as a physical therapist has prepared them to support our commitment to serving the health care needs of Arizona by fostering a diverse community supported by an equitable, inclusive campus climate that engages diverse stakeholders in graduate physical therapy education. Responsibilities will primarily include teaching, scholarship, as well as service to Arizona communities, NAU, and the PT profession.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A professional doctorate (DPT) - earned from a regionally accredited institution.
  • A minimum of 3 years of clinical experience as a physical therapist.
  • Must be authorized to work in the US and eligible to obtain PT licensure in Arizona.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated commitment to work with people of diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Experience in working with rural, Indigenous- Native American populations and/or in pro-bono physical therapy services.
  • Experience with and desire for interprofessional practice/education.
  • Experience and desire to work in a diverse collaborative team.
  • Experience with tele-health/rehabilitation
  • Experience in health care administration/leadership
  • An American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS) certification or certification credentials appropriate for their teaching responsibilities.
  • Prior classroom/laboratory teaching experience in the management of patients:
    • across the continuum of care with medically complex health conditions
    • with neurological health conditions
  • A terminal academic doctoral degree (PhD, EdD, DSc, etc.) or equivalent in a closely related biomedical science field to physical therapy from an accredited institution.

Flagstaff has a population of about 70,000, rich in cultural diversity. Located at the base of the majestic San Francisco Peaks, Flagstaff is 140 miles north of Phoenix at the intersection of Interstate 17 and Interstate 40.

With its elevation of 7,000 feet and four-season climate, Flagstaff is ideal for year-round outdoor activities. Nearby attractions include the Grand Canyon, Lowell Observatory, Oak Creek Canyon, Sedona, Monument Valley, Sunset Crater, Meteor Crater, and Arizona Snowbowl.

Background Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. If you are applying for a job that requires a CDL, you will be required to register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse and adhere to the clearinghouse requirements. Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States. Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities. This is a Faculty (FAC) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) or the Optional Retirement Program (ORP); sick leave accruals and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members. More information on benefits at NAU is available at the NAU HR benefits page. Faculty are hired on a contract basis, renewable according to terms of the Conditions of Faculty Service. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). Employees will have 31 days from date of hire to enroll in benefits, and their benefits will then be effective the first day of the pay period following their completed enrollment. If a new employee chooses the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) retirement option, participation in the ASRS Plan (and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it) will begin on the first of the pay period following 183 days of employment. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP; an alternative to the ASRS plan) will begin to participate on the first day of the pay period following election.
