Job Description:

POSITION SUMMARY
The Supervisor, Language Institute provides general oversight to the Language Institute non-credit instructors, staff, and program day-to-day operations and activities to support participating students and potential new students. Additionally, the incumbent assesses program operational needs and resources in coordination with the Director of Community and Service Learning, and provides needed input for new processes to direct the program toward achievement of its objectives.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Language Institute Program Management
Coordinates and supervises all activities and scheduling of the Language Institute classes, programs and projects on CSCC sites. Supports and assists Director in establishing externally-funded non-credit programs in language and literacy skills. Administers federal, state, and local grant programs for the Community & Service Learning Department as appropriate. Adjusts and customizes curriculum. Collaborates with instructors, clients, and applicable departmental staff to create and modify placement tests, course outlines, syllabi, and final exams. Coordinates program functions and ensures program is administered in accordance with established procedures and requirements. Determines and communicates course schedule in accordance with established procedures, purchases, and duplicates materials, and obtains instructors. Supervises ESL Educators and oversees classroom instruction. Provides instructors with curriculum, textbooks, instructional materials, and other items. Observes instructors and their delivery of curriculum and provides appropriate feedback to improve performance and overall program.

Builds relationships and promotes growth of the Basic ESL program with (a) other College departments and programs to provide support to and improve processes for students seeking to transition to college coursework and (b) supports and assists Director to build relationships and promote growth with social service agencies, businesses, and organizations for the purpose of recruiting potential students. Provides communication to internal and external stakeholders of plans, policies, and procedures. Serves as part of a work team on projects and initiatives for the benefit of the department, division, and the college. Assists with data collection, data analysis, and communication activities. Provides customer service to program stakeholders. Responds to questions and issues by telephone, in person, or by correspondence. Supports and assists Director in outreach to the Central Ohio New American community to promote awareness of Columbus State and the Language Institute. Develops brochures, distributes posters, oversees social media presence, maintains website, and displays booths at public events and other forms of promotions. Works closely with Marketing and Communications to ensure effective publicity and marketing strategies.

Operational Leadership
Assigns and delegates tasks, provides direction, resolves issues, eliminates barriers, communicates job expectations, trains instructors and staff, and develops professional growth opportunities. Communicates and assists with the implementation of office strategies and priorities. Recruits, hires, and provides ongoing feedback and coaching.

Supports, assists, provides needed input and data to Director for enrollment plan development. Implements plan. Ensures plans are communicated to staff and instructors. Supports, assists, suggests new policies/procedures. Implements same and ensures they are followed in accordance with policy and requirements. Follows up and takes corrective action as needed when these are not followed.

Conducts annual employee evaluations, and recommends pay increases, promotions, and other personnel actions. Administers disciplinary actions upon approval, and in collaboration with Human Resources. Approves leave and authorizes work schedule alterations as appropriate. Interprets, explains, carries out and enforces the College's policies..

Administrative
Supports, assists, provides needed input in development and monitoring of annual budgets for Basic ESL program. Provides data and detailed reports to direct evaluation of programs on a regular and as-need basis. Maintains confidentiality of college records, maintains financial records, inventories, and other sensitive information. Completes and maintains required documentation including enrollment materials, expense reports and purchase requisitions per college and funder requirements. Maintains a library of research/assessment/evaluation/course modules/curriculum to ensure program efficacy and best practices.

Supports, assists, provides needed input and data to Director for grant proposals by reviewing request for proposals and other agency information.

Assists in writing various selections of proposal text and reviews materials prepared by others. Works as part of a team to facilitate a proposal process with the Director incorporating all aspects of funding including, but not limited to, job descriptions, position descriptions, budgets, sustainability, leveraging and collaboration. Assists in standardizing evaluation processes, compliance reports, file management and retention for new and existing grants/contracts.

Develops training and professional development activities for new programs. Communicates with college collaborators regarding funding, compliance, and evaluation. Utilizes internal and external resources to facilitate the grant process.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master’s degree with three (3) years progressively responsible related experience.
  • Master’s of Arts in TESOL (M.A. TESOL) is strongly preferred.
  • State Motor Vehicle Operator's License or demonstrable ability to gain access to work site(s).
