    Department Summary

The Division of Undergraduate Education and Student Success (UESS) promotes academic excellence, universal access, engagement, and achievement for the student scholar. UESS programs focus on the educational trajectory of the student by providing opportunities and services essential for progress toward scholastic objectives and intellectual development. UESS departments and programs serve the entire population of UO undergraduate students and partner closely with other campus units to support student success and engagement.

The College of Arts and Sciences has nearly 50 departments and programs, spanning the Humanities, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences, and comprises about two-thirds of all faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate majors on campus.

    Position Summary

The Senior Director for Tykeson College and Career Advising (TCCA) will help the University of Oregon lead the nation in ensuring students' success as scholars and as people pursuing meaningful post-graduate careers. To achieve this goal, the senior director will lead and manage a staff of approximately 30 professional advisors (four to seven direct reports) in Tykeson Hall. These advisors will: a) counsel students on academic pathways suited to students' passions (primary focus on degree-seeking students within the College of Arts and Sciences); and, b) provide guidance on careers to which those academic pathways may lead. This innovative advising center is central to the University of Oregon's commitment to student success, a commitment that is so crucial that a 56,000 SF building opened Fall 2019 to support it.

TCCA staff serve as professional advisors for majors and minors in the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS). The entire advising team is cross-trained across academic disciplines and in career readiness advising. The director will work in conjunction with Undergraduate Education and Student Success (UESS) and College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) leadership to hire, train and manage an advising staff that provides students with integrated academic and career advising.

The senior director reports directly to the UESS Assistant Vice Provost for Advising and Accessibility and is a member of the UESS leadership group. The senior director works collaboratively with advising leaders and partners across campus to implement and assess the framework for integrated academic and career advising in Tykeson Hall. CAS leadership serves as a critical partner to the success of TCCA and the CAS Dean has input in the director's performance evaluations.

The senior director and TCCA advising staff also work closely with the UO Career Center, co-located in Tykeson Hall, to ensure career readiness efforts are aligned.

The senior director provides departmental, divisional, and institutional leadership to promote student success; diversity, equity, and inclusion; and effective organizational development. Collaboration and creativity with directors of other advising units across administrative and academic departments is critical. The senior director must exhibit professionalism, collegiality in a team environment, and the ability to create a welcoming and professional atmosphere in the office. This person must exhibit cultural humility and agility, with the ability and commitment to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds. The senior director will develop a team that can support a variety of students with diverse academic interests, abilities, and cultural, socioeconomic, and educational backgrounds.

    Minimum Requirements

  • Master's degree.
  • Three years of experience in higher education academic, career advising, or counseling, working with a range of undergraduate students from first-year students, exploring students, and students with declared majors.
  • Three years in a leadership position, including responsibilities for hiring, supervision, and organizational development.

    Professional Competencies

  • A broad working knowledge of student development principles.
  • Demonstrated understanding of issues facing diverse groups (e.g. low-socioeconomic, first-generation, underrepresented students of color, non-traditional, and under-prepared individuals).
  • Ability to analyze academic advising services and implement changes or improvements as needed.
  • Demonstrated strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to manage and develop staff in a way that advances and supports the UESS mission.
  • Strong evidence of ability to set operational goals from strategic plans and lead direct reports in accomplishing these strategic goals and initiatives.
  • Demonstrated high-level organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and multi-task effectively in a fast-paced, detail-oriented, and time-sensitive environment.
  • Diligently attends to details and pursues quality in accomplishing tasks.
  • Recognizes situations that warrant initiative and moves forward without hesitation; resolving issues, problems, or situations.
  • Ability to anticipate next steps and execute independently.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office Suite (or similar). Ability to produce professional correspondence, documents, data reports, and presentations.
