About Northeastern

Founded in 1898, Northeastern is a global research university and the recognized leader in experience-driven lifelong learning. Our world-renowned experiential approach empowers our students, faculty, alumni, and partners to create impact far beyond the confines of discipline, degree, and campus.

Our locations—in Boston; Oakland; Arlington, Charlotte, North Carolina; London; Portland, Maine; Oakland; San Francisco; Seattle; Silicon Valley; Toronto; Vancouver; and the Massachusetts communities of Burlington and Nahant—are nodes in our growing global university system. Through this network, we expand opportunities for flexible, student-centered learning and collaborative, solutions-focused research.

Northeastern's comprehensive array of undergraduate and graduate programs— in a variety of on-campus and online formats—lead to degrees through the doctorate in nine colleges and schools. Among these, we offer more than 195 multi-discipline majors and degrees designed to prepare students for purposeful lives and careers.

The OHDSI Center at Northeastern's Roux Institute

The Observational Health Data Sciences and Informatics (OHDSI) Center at Northeastern's Roux Institute equips learners and researchers with the training, credentials, and resources they need to extract value from observational health data. Through collaborations with academia, industry, and government worldwide, we generate study results that serve as accurate, reliable guides for healthcare decision making. Impact Engines at Northeastern University

Impact Engines galvanize and organize interdisciplinary learning, research, and partnerships around solving a challenge or set of challenges, with the goal of maximum impact. Impact Engines span disciplines, colleges, campuses, and industry sectors, connecting diverse communities of problem-solvers around creating measurable change. They are a key pillar of the university's new academic plan, and a means for Northeastern to claim leadership as an institution with broad societal impact. (https://impactengines.northeastern.edu/)

About the Opportunity

Northeastern University invites applications for multiple tenured/ tenure-track faculty positions in support of an Impact Engine centered on large-scale observational health data science and informatics to start in the fall of 2023. These faculty will be core members of our Real-World Healthcare Navigator (RWHN) Impact Engine which aims to change how research is translated into clinical practice by establishing a sustainable service that leads the way in fully reproducing health studies (https://impactengines.northeastern.edu/ie/rwhn/).

We welcome applicants involved across the entire pipeline of conducting observational health studies at scale, with a focus on faculty whose research areas include the use of real-world data such as health insurance billing and claims data, electronic health records, and disease/medication registries. We are particularly interested in individuals who bring expertise in topics including data interoperability, data harmonization, data standardization, ontology development, causal inference, pharmacoepidemiology, population and personalized health, precision oncology, open science, Bayesian methods, biostatistics, or related fields.

Successful candidates will work closely with the OHDSI (Observational Health Data Sciences and Informatics) Center at Northeastern's Roux Institute to develop and apply healthcare analytics in the real-world evidence (RWE) area with the goal of improving patient health outcomes. Because these will be interdisciplinary positions, successful faculty members will be appointed to Departments and Colleges at Northeastern University that best fit their interdisciplinary research focus. Responsibilities will include teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses, conducting independent and collaborative externally funded research, advising students, and performing service to both the university and profession. Candidates should possess a PhD or other terminal degree in a related field by the appointment start date, and a record of research commensurate with rank.

Impact Engine Fellows are hired as an Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor, as part of the Impact Engine initiative at Northeastern (https://impactengines.northeastern.edu/). Impact Engines bring together diverse interdisciplinary expertise and experience focused on a global problem and its contexts and perspectives. The tenured/tenure-track faculty line will persist beyond the lifetime of the Impact Engine.

Our tenure and promotion process values collaborative research and teamwork. Hires will be mentored for success, with mentoring teams and group guidance. In addition, a strong and effective faculty development strategy is part of the Northeastern institutional mission. The ADVANCE Office of Faculty Development office works in conjunction with the Office of Research Development (ORD), the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ODEI), the Center for Advancing Teaching and Learning Through Research (CATLR), and University Decision Support (UDS) to provide programs and trainings to further develop and support a thriving faculty.

At Northeastern University, we embrace a culture of respect, where each person is valued for their contribution and is treated fairly. We oppose all forms of racism. We support a culture that does not tolerate any form of discrimination and where each person may belong. We strive to have a diverse membership, one where each person is trained and mentored to promote their success.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities will include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, conducting an independent and externally funded research program, and participating in departmental, college, and university service. Qualified candidates must have expertise in, or a demonstrated commitment to, working with diverse student populations and/or in a culturally diverse work and educational environment.

Qualifications
  • PhD or equivalent in Statistics, Bioinformatics, Data Science, Epidemiology, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or similar field.
  • Expertise working with large relational databases (e.g., EHRs, Medicare) preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge of analytic approaches including data wrangling, visualization, and machine learning preferred.
  • Expertise in either R or Python.
