Position Summary:
Reporting to the Vice President for Student Affairs in Salem, the Associate Dean (AD) serves as the senior student affairs administrator and primary manager for the student life department at the Pacific Northwest College of Art at Willamette University (PNCA) in Portland. The Associate Dean leads the Student Affairs team and is responsible for the co-curricular education, engagement, and support of approximately 500 undergraduate and 150 graduate students. This includes planning and oversight of initiatives, programs, and care aimed at building inclusive communities that promote academic success, personal growth, and student well-being. The AD serves as the primary supervisor for the Health Coach and Educator and the Director of Student Affairs who, in turn, supervises one Residence Life Coordinator that serves as the live-in professional for “ArtHouse”, where approximately 100 students reside in apartment-style living.

The Associate Dean of Students will assist in leading efforts to ensure the PNCA Student Affairs department fosters a welcoming and inclusive campus environment, and aligns with divisional, college, and university diversity, equity and inclusion goals. The AD serves as a relationship builder--mentoring, advising, and connecting with students and members of the campus community to identify needs and develop strategies to enhance students' learning and overall experience at PNCA. The AD collaborates with the Academic Dean, Campus Security, Academic Affairs, Facilities, faculty and staff on the Salem campus in accomplishing these goals.

The Associate Dean ensures all aspects of the University's conduct system are followed at PNCA and serves as a Deputy Title IX Coordinator. The AD leads the PNCA Student Care Team; ensuring case management support and assistance to students in crisis, stress, and distress.

The Associate Dean ensures appropriate oversight for student events, student clubs and organization advising, student engagement and leadership development, and coordination of New Student and Family orientation and family weekend events. The AD serves in an on-call rotation for emergency and response.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Student Affairs Management
  • Provide innovative and strategic leadership for the programmatic and operational functions of the PNCA Student Affairs Office.
  • Ensure day-to-day operations include efficient systems to meet professional standards and timely and sensitive response to students', families', and the University community members' questions, concerns, and requests for assistance.
  • Supervise professional staff. Hold regular 1-1 meetings with the Director of Student Life , lead weekly department staff meetings, and provide appropriate professional development opportunities for staff.
  • Establish a sense of team, communication expectations, collaboration, and positive staff relations among professional and paraprofessional staff members and colleagues.
  • Ensure staff training that leads to the facilitation of inclusive communities that support students' development of multicultural understanding, cross-cultural relationships, academic success, and wellbeing.
  • Oversee PNCA crisis management systems and emergency protocols; work collaboratively with PNCA faculty, and Salem campus staff: Dean of Students, Facilities, Campus Safety, Bishop Wellness Center staff, and off-campus agencies (local authorities, medical facilities/personnel) as needed.
  • Effectively manages financial accounts. Follows all university policies and procedures for purchases and spending.
  • Safeguards the confidentiality of discussions with students and colleagues by exercising discretion in communication and handling of all confidential information and materials.

New Student and Family Orientation
  • Support the Director of Student Life and Residence Life Coordinator in the planning of new student orientation activities.
  • Participate in the college planning of the new student, family, and transfer student summer, spring, and fall orientation programs with campus partners.
  • Ensure the creation of a new student and family orientation communication plan (e.g., website, e-mails, social media) with campus partners.
  • Coordinate opening logistics with campus partner on both the Portland and Salem campuses.
  • Support the Office of admissions in recruitment and orientation efforts.

Student Leadership and Engagement
  • Lead the department's development of a robust education program adhering to the Curricular Approach Mode.
  • Ensure programs/initiatives/community meetings promote inclusivity and support student success, student learning, community development, and overall well-being.
  • Ensure the on-going development of initiatives in partnership with faculty and staff liaisons based on community interests, and student needs.
  • Ensure support and advising to the Student Councils (undergraduate and graduate) and student organization leaders occurs.
  • Ensure fiscal guidance and ethical use for student activities fund usage and expenditures.
  • Maintain visibility by regularly interacting with students, attending events, and engaging in appropriate outreach to develop and maintain relationships.

Student Advising and Support
  • Advises students and family members in decision-making as appropriate and provide resource referrals to help support student success and well-being.
  • Is available, approachable and responsive to students. Advise and refer individual students and groups regarding personal and academic needs.
  • Serve on the senior staff on-call team on a rotating basis to support residence life staff responding to emergency situations during the evening and weekend hours. Consult with university staff concerning serious or problematic situations as needed.
  • Oversee support student recognition initiatives and promote leadership opportunities.
  • Ensure the development of department systems for staff's timely and sensitive response, outreach, and relationship building for students of concern and on-going tracking of follow-up.
  • Assist students, faculty and staff in mediating and addressing student conflicts, applying restorative and community development principles.

Student Conduct
  • Promotes student rights and responsibilities through the fair and consistent administration of the University code of conduct, policies, and procedures.
  • Ensure student code of conduct and university policies and procedures are updated and communicated to the community as needed.
  • Ensure training for all levels of staff to ensure staff's educational response and timely follow up to violations of residence hall and University policies.
  • Serve as an Administrative/University Hearing Officer, Investigator or member of the University conduct panel hearing board for high level judicial and Title IX cases as needed.
  • Oversees professional and student staff responsibilities in communication of community expectations of students, response to behavioral issues, and the adjudication of student conduct.

Divisional & College Leadership
  • Attend monthly divisional meetings, bi-weekly divisional leadership team meetings, trainings and committee meetings. Attend PNCA leadership team meetings and meetings with the academic dean and other colleagues, as needed.
  • Be accessible, visible, and present for relevant/occasional university speakers and major events; attend staff/student-planned community development activities and educational events as appropriate.
  • Chaperone and assist in organization of large, annual, campus-wide programs as needed such as opening days events, Senior class events, and commencement.
  • Assist in leading task forces, presenting training topics, and executing divisional and university projects as needed.
  • Lead/Coordinate curricular approach and education efforts at PNCA based on divisional learning outcomes.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
  • Co-create and operationalize a compelling vision for DEI across at PNCA with campus leadership.
  • Strengthen the sense of belonging and shared community among students and the PNCA community.
  • Bolster programming and initiatives that engage underrepresented and nontraditional students to engage in academic and co-curricular experiences.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • A Master's degree in Student Personnel, counseling, or related discipline is required.
  • Minimum of 6 years of progressive student affairs experience is required.
  • Possess a sound background in student/human development theory. Committed to expanding knowledge and understanding of student development and social issues (e.g. alcohol and other drugs, Title IX, international and multicultural issues, eating disorders, mental health, etc.)
  • Experience working or studying in an art and design school.
  • A demonstrated commitment and passion for professional growth in the areas of student learning and development, community development, supporting students' well-being.
  • Knowledge of equity and inclusion issues and laws that impact higher education and particularly community living (all gender spaces, Title IX, affinity based learning, ADA compliance).
  • Demonstrated commitment to expand knowledge and awareness of diversity, equity, and inclusion, understanding cultural differences, social identities, and historical inequalities, and strategies for interacting effectively with people different from oneself and providing support and advocacy for diverse communities.
  • Demonstrated experience using diversity, equity, and inclusion lens in delivering programs and services practice (i.e., staffing practices, supervision, training, policies, programs) and working effectively with individuals and groups from a variety of identities, cultures, and backgrounds.
  • Involvement in local, regional, and national organizations supporting the field of student affairs (such as ACPA and NASPA).
  • Possess excellent basic helping skills and displays empathy and regard for others' concerns. Ability to demonstrate sensitively to the diversity of individuals' needs, backgrounds, life and work styles. Ability to practice a developmental approach to behavioral problems and develop strong rapport.
  • Ability to function competently under pressure and effectively diffuse crisis situations and demonstrate sound judgment.
  • Ability to manage time and tasks to accomplish responsibilities in a timely manner. Ability to work independently as well as accept direction.
  • Occasional availability on weekends and evenings as needed.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Progressive increased level of responsibility preferred in crisis management, student advising, supervision, student conduct, and program planning.
  • Previous experience at a college, particularly an art college, is preferred.


Salary: $98,800
