Scope of Job:
Responsible for providing overall management and direction for the Office of Academic Advising and Support Services within the School of Medicine. Ensures the delivery of professional and effective academic advising to both medical students and residents to ensure timely degree completion. Develops and fosters external relationships to aid the academic success of both medical students and residents in accordance to the strategic objectives set forth by leadership. Ensures compliance with applicable LCME standards at all times.

Description of Duties:
• Provides leadership and guidance on best practices that fully support the delivery of a consistent and highly effective academic advising for students and residents.
• Develops mid and long-range plans, conceptual designs, budget requirements and documentation for the department.
• Develops the planning, monitoring and compliance of the assigned budget.
• Responsible for evaluating strategic advising initiatives which will further the success of timely degree completion and academic success.
• Leads and manages systems and policies that support program planning, implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement of services for students and residents provided by the Office of Academic Advising and Support Services.
• Designs and oversees implementation of support services for students’ and residents needing exam skills in preparation for USMLE Step Exams.
• Conducts needs analyses and utilizes performance management data to identify student learning and development needs; recommends and/or design learning solutions.
• Conducts studies to determine students’ use of services, effectiveness, and satisfaction.
• Collaborates with faculty, module directors and deans in the Office of Educational and Academic Affairs to evaluate early intervention and remediation strategies.
• Facilitates training for UME and GME faculty on recognizing learning and exam-taking deficiencies among students and residents.
• Develops and promotes academic support services to students.
• Works closely with internal/external departments/agencies and other organizations such as the Medical Student Evaluation, Curriculum Committee, Optimal Learning Environment Committee, Pre-Clerkship Module Directors Committee, Office of Students Rights and Responsibility, UTRGV Counseling, Student Accessibility Services, Office of Graduate Medical Education, Graduate Medical Education Committee, Accreditation Review and Continuous Quality Improvement Committee, etc.
• Develops processes, policies and procedures that ensure full compliance by the Office of Academic Advising and Support Services with LCME and SACS accreditation requirements.
• Manages the hiring, training, and evaluation of staff.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

General Direction from assigned supervisor.

Supervision Given:
Direct supervision of assigned staff.

Required Education:
M.S. or M.Ed. from an accredited university.

Preferred Education:
Ed.D. in Education or Ph.D. in Psychology/Educational Psychology from an accredited university.

Licenses/Certifications:
None.

Required Experience:
Five (5) years of experience in assessing, evaluating and diagnosing learning difficulties strategies, in an educational environment. Familiarity with Learning Style Inventories and/or other assessment tools and software. Experience working with students in higher education. Experience working with graduate and undergraduate students. Experience working with medical students and resident doctors to include supervisory experience.

Use of standard office equipment.

Working Conditions:
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Some travel and weekend work may be required. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment across the Rio Grande Valley.

Other:
Strong leadership skills. Knowledge in the area of academic advising, support services, student retention and student success. Exceptional planning and organizational skills. Familiarity with Learning Style Inventories and/or other assessment tools and software.
