Environmental Education and Conservation Social Science
The Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Management at Clemson University is pleased to announce a new Postdoctoral Research Associate position starting Summer or Fall 2023. The position involves working closely with Dr. Robert Powell and focuses primarily on research supported by the U.S. National Park Service entitled: "What leads to better outcomes in National Park Service Interpretation?" and a National Science Foundation Advancing Informal STEM Learning (AISL) Research in Service to Practice Grant entitled: "What leads to better outcomes in informal STEM-based environmental education programs for youth?" The effort is part of ongoing research examining which approaches tend to lead to more meaningful outcomes for participants in interpretation and environmental education programs across the United States, in partnership with Marc J. Stern, Virginia Tech.
The Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management at Clemson University is one of the largest of its type in North America, with 35 full-time faculty, and approximately 150 graduate students (Masters and Ph.D.) and 500 undergraduates. Clemson University is a Research-1 public, land-grant university in a college-town setting along a dynamic Southeastern corridor. It is located on the shores of Lake Hartwell in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
This is a benefit-eligible, 12-month position with an annual salary of $65,000 plus benefits. Additional teaching and research opportunities exist including evaluations of environmental education programs that may augment the base salary. The position is renewable annually with funding up to 2 years, contingent on performance. There is a strong preference for the postdoc to be based physically at Clemson's campus in Clemson, SC, USA.
Primary duties:
- Planning and logistical support for national research effort
- Provide research design support
- Manage and mentor graduate students and research assistants
- Manage data collection and entry
- Perform quantitative data analysis
- Present at conferences and other professional meetings
- Co-author peer-reviewed publications and other reports
- Assist with grant writing
- Support other research activities as needed
Qualifications
- A PhD (ABD with PhD completion in Spring/Summer 2023 acceptable) in informal science education, communications, sociology, psychology, positive youth development, evaluation, conservation social sciences, Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Management, or other relevant field.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Strong quantitative analysis skills with experience in statistical software programs, such as SPSS and R
- Experience in database management
- Experience in project management
- Demonstrated experience publishing peer-reviewed social science articles
- Willingness to travel for periods of up to 4 weeks
Additional desired experience:
- Experience or expertise in interpretation and environmental education
- Experience collaborating on larger research projects with an ability to manage others, including graduate students
- Experience with multilevel modeling and other advanced statistical procedures
