Job Description

The Associate Director of Business Development will serve as the primary interface between a defined portfolio of industry partners and the university, as well as support program partnerships and corporate engagement related to key strategic activities of the Pamplin College of Business. This person will identify, create, and expand fundraising with corporate partners, manage connections with industry advisory board members and Pamplin COB’s centers to foster big ideas/challenge opportunities, facilitate student internships, professional training, and networking events, serve as a bridge between Pamplin COB and central Alumni-Industry engagement efforts and other University activities and programs in response to industry partner needs and interests. The candidate must be motivated to advance the mission of an innovative and dynamic business college with a strong working knowledge of the strategic importance business education plays in the economic growth of the Commonwealth of Virginia and enhancing our global brand.

Reporting to the Executive Director of LINK and embedded in the Pamplin College of Business, the Associate Director of Business Development will:

 Nurture and expand relationships with prospective industry partners, often with senior leaders, serving as the primary point of contact for a portfolio of corporations.
 Work closely with the Pamplin Northern VA graduate programs and select undergraduate such as the BIT-Cyber degree, leadership faculty, program managers, staff, and Advancement professionals across the institution to engage industry partners, making links between company interests/market needs and university opportunities, research, and students.
 Create new connections, including with the C-suite, with a focus on the Commonwealth Cyber Initiative, the Integrated Security Education and Research Center (ISERC), and the new Business Information Technology degree with a focus in Cybersecurity in the Washington, DC area, and the Department of BIT, to enhance strategic and holistic partnerships that, in some cases, may span Virginia Tech and other ecosystem partners and in support of the Pamplin COB strategic plan pillars: security, privacy and trust and business analytics.

 Develop intelligence around and connections to the Pamplin Center for Business Analytics (CBA) and research interests, capabilities, and activities connections, identifying opportunities that have industry/market relevance; organize working sessions, and effectively connect and shepherd the relationships working closely with the Executive Director of the CBA.

 Create new connections, including with the C-Suite, with a focus on the hospitality and tourism industry; entrepreneurship in coordination with the Department of Management and the Apex Center for Entrepreneurs; and the Blackwood Department in Real Estate working closely with the respective department heads and program directors, with a focus in the Washington, DC area and across the Commonwealth, to enhance strategic and holistic partnerships, that, in some cases, may span Virginia tech and other ecosystem partners and in support of the Pamplin COB strategic plan pillars; business analytics and innovation and entrepreneurship and in support of economic development opportunities for the Commonwealth.

 Identify, shape, and solicit corporate opportunities (including philanthropic), through a variety of mechanisms, including organizing working sessions and co-creation activities with members of the faculty and staff.

 Schedule and host corporate visits to VT campuses that reflect the breadth of Pamplin COB and university offerings, driving toward tangible opportunities and outcomes.

 Maintain knowledge of technology, research, and recruiting needs of industry, as well as of specific firms.

 Assist in crafting grant applications, proposals, white papers, status reports and corporate report cards.

 Assist in formulating collaboration strategies and opportunities, as well as research contract and gift agreement review and processing.

 Assist in developing marketing initiatives and stewardship programs that appeal to corporate partners.

 Engage with College leadership, department heads, and faculty to shape and promote ideas with fundraising potential.

 Bridge Pamplin COB activities with central Alumni-Industry engagement strategies and efforts.

Required Qualifications

 Bachelor’s degree with multiple years of sales/industry experience; or master’s or other advanced degree.

 Demonstrated experience in consultative or sales/marketing, business development, client management, business/research strategy, and/or innovation/partnerships function.

 Demonstrated track record of professionalism, with strong communication skills and ability to work with and support a wide range of constituents, e.g., clients, customers, teams, donors, and volunteers.

 Demonstrated ability to analyze data (e.g., market, technical, and customer) and lend technical expertise to establish priorities, and develop and implement strategies with increasing complexity.

 Evidence as a self-starter who can work independently, as well as be a team contributor in a complex and fast-paced organization.

 Willingness to travel on a frequent basis.

Preferred Qualifications

 Industry background, familiarity with business education preferred.

 Demonstrated experience with executive education and certificate programs.

 Evidence of business/revenue growth and/or partnership development in a technical sales/marketing capacity.

 Evidence of productive relationships and facilitation with administrators, key business leaders, faculty, staff, institutional boards, volunteers, and/or donors.

 Demonstrated business development/strategy experience developing progressively complex strategies and using data analytics, technical/domain knowledge and information, and competitive/market intelligence to guide decision making.
