Job Description

Continuing and Professional Education (CPE) is seeking a collaborative and enthusiastic leader with strong emotional intelligence and a growth-mindset leadership style to expand a robust portfolio of educational development and corporate training programs. The portfolio includes non-credit boot camps, short courses, certificate programs, corporate-sponsored technical assistance programs, conferences, and graduate-level credit courses delivered to adult learners through various modalities. The associate director is responsible for supporting existing client relations as well as developing and building new relationships with a strong focus on corporate and public sector organizations. The associate director must remain relevant in workforce development and continuing education trends in order to identify and develop new programs that are in-demand by learners and align with Virginia Tech’s core values and strengths. The ultimate goal for this position is to liaise with faculty, organizations, and industry leaders to build programs that assist adult learners in career advancement and lifelong learning.

Reporting to the director of CPE, the associate director is responsible for generating program revenues and meeting annual revenue targets by developing and expanding market-driven and strategic continuing and professional education opportunities across the Commonwealth. The associate director serves as the primary CPE contact in the greater Washington, D.C. metro area and will be an integral member of the CPE leadership team. Through a client-centered approach, this individual will be part of a distributed team in Outreach & International Affairs (OIA), working to identify, nurture and expand connections to faculty expertise, research centers, and institutes through program development and technical assistance. The associate director will engage clients to support the growth and development of their team members by identifying their workforce and community development needs. The associate director is also responsible for supervision of CPE team members based in the region. This position will include some overnight travel as well as occasionally working weekends and outside of standard business hours.

•Collaborates with community leaders, Virginia Tech OIA/Engagement leaders, faculty/staff, and other stakeholders to catalyze, facilitate, and support program development initiatives throughout the Commonwealth, with an emphasis on the greater Washington, D.C. metro area.

•Provides business development through new lead generation and existing client management.

•Builds revenue through program creation, expansion, and delivery.

•Conducts market research and needs assessments to identify education and training opportunities to address corporate, government, and community learning needs.

•Works closely with faculty, researchers, and program managers across the institution to identify need areas for program development, making connections between market needs and university expertise.

•Manages and expands the university’s growing contract-credit portfolio.

Required Qualifications

•Master’s degree in a related field with demonstrated experience in business development or executive education program development

•Experience establishing partnerships that develop and deliver customized, self-supporting, educational programs for business, industry, government, and professional groups.

•Proven ability to establish and maintain collaborative relationships.

•Demonstrated skills in budget development as well as strong evidence of business/revenue generation.

•Experience in sales/marketing, business development, client management, and/or business strategy.

•Demonstrated ability to utilize data and market trends to identify opportunities to meet market demands.

•Innovative and proactive problem-solving skills with the ability to exercise high integrity and sound judgment.

•Proven track record of professionalism with strong communication skills (both written and verbal) and the ability to work with a diverse clientele.

•Evidence as a self-starter who can work independently, as well as be a team contributor in a complex and fast-paced organization.

•Supervisory experience

Preferred Qualifications

•Formal training or education in adult learning, learning & development, or organizational development field.

•Evidence of building productive relationships with administrators, key business leaders, faculty, staff, institutional boards.

•Demonstrated experience in securing external funding.

•Certifications and/or experience in consulting, leadership development, and/or organizational development to help business leaders enhance the knowledge and strength of their teams.

•Prior experience developing progressively complex strategies and using data analytics and competitive/market intelligence to guide decision-making regarding strategic program direction.

•Experience working with a student information system (SIS) and customer relationship management (CRM) system.

•Experience working in a higher education setting.
