The Executive Director of Development for the Department of Neurology and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation will plan, manage and coordinate all private-sector fundraising in support of the research, teaching, and patient care for the departments. This individual will provide operational oversight and is responsible for all aspects of philanthropy, including grateful patient engagement, the direct management of annual, major, and principal gift operations, data management, stewardship, development communications, and donor events. Combined, the overall fundraising goal averages $35 million annually. This individual will coordinate all fundraising activities in consultation with the Director of Neurology, Director of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R), division directors, faculty, department administrators, and the FJHM staff. This individual will have a direct reporting relationship to the Vice President of Development of the Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine, the Director of the Department of Neurology, and a dotted line to the Director of PM&R. He/she will serve in a leadership role, working closely with faculty across both departments.

Primary Duties:

  • Work directly with the Director of Neurology, Director of PM&R, and the Vice President of development to create a development vision and strategy that will meet and exceed the annual average of $35M and be focused on each department's funding priorities.
  • Manage the principal prospects and donors for the Dept of PM&R and those currently assigned in the Dept. of Neurology.
  • Serve on the leadership team for both departments. Present on development activity at Faculty meetings, attend Grand Rounds, as well as, participate in leadership groups at the Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine and Johns Hopkins University.
  • Articulate fundraising priorities, goals, and objectives. Develop an annual and long-range operating plan to allow for the implementation of the vision and strategy for Neurology and PM&R.
  • Advocates for, empower, coach, and provide supervision, training, and guidance to an 8-10-person development team, including direct and indirect reports, major gift officers, and administrative team members deployed across both departments.
  • Plan, implement, and manage a major gift fund-raising portfolio with the following metrics:
    • Maintain a minimum of an active portfolio of up to 50 prospects across both departments and engage directly in major and principal gift cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of individuals, foundations, and corporations.
    • Serve as the senior liaison for 90+ faculty partners, ensure an appropriate level of faculty engagement across the department, and individually staff two department directors and approximately 10 additional faculty members.
    • Complete a minimum of 60 donor visits per year, soliciting at least 10 principal or major gifts per year and individually closing gifts totaling at least $15M annually.
  • Coordinate access and utilization of central resources such as gift planning, principal prospects, and trustee support and research. Partner with development colleagues on donors/prospects with multiple affiliations.
  • Prepare and manage the $750K + budget for the development office.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Ten years of related professional experience including three years supervising professional-level staff.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Medical fundraising experience, with a proven ability to cultivate, solicit, and steward major gifts.
  • At least three years of management experience and an ability to lead by example.
  • Experience identifying and securing planned gifts.
  • The intellectual depth, maturity, wisdom, and collaborative skills to garner the trust and confidence of the department directors and faculty, development colleagues, volunteers, trustees, and constituents.
  • Ability to work within a complex, multi-divisional and multi-departmental environment to establish priorities, set objectives and achieve stated goals.
  • Superlative interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to work well with people at all levels of an organization, across a diverse range of educational and social backgrounds.
  • A broad understanding of multi-faceted campaign planning, implementation and management.
  • Superior written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to mentor and manage development professional and administrative staff.
  • Willingness to travel.
