Visiting Assistant Professor – English and Critical Ethnic Studies

The Departments of English and Critical Ethnic Studies at Kalamazoo College invite applications for a 1-year Visiting Assistant Professor position beginning in Fall, 2023. We seek candidates with a specialization in Indigenous Literatures, late 19th-21st century U.S. literature, and expertise in gender, sexuality, race, and ethnicity within a transnational framework. The candidate will teach six classes per year over three terms (2-2-2), including courses in U.S. Indigenous Literatures, the English Department’s Reading the World courses, Critical Ethnic Studies’ Insurgency & Solidarity course, and a First-Year Seminar course. The position also includes the possibility of advising 1-2 student Senior Integrated Projects in English or CES. The successful applicant will work closely with permanent faculty, and support is offered for faculty research and professional development.

The position will begin in September, 2023. A Ph.D. in English, Indigenous Studies, or a related discipline by time of appointment is required. Candidates are expected to have high aptitude and interest in undergraduate teaching and a commitment to the liberal arts. Kalamazoo College has made a commitment to inclusive excellence. We especially encourage applications from candidates whose intellectual and pedagogical approaches will be effective in attracting and retaining historically underrepresented students. The successful applicant will demonstrate a strong commitment to working with students, faculty, and staff from diverse social, cultural, and economic backgrounds.

Kalamazoo College is a nationally known liberal arts college of approximately 1450 motivated students, offering an integrated undergraduate experience that weaves a traditional liberal arts curriculum into domestic and international educational experiences. It is a member of the Posse Program and home of the Arcus Center for Social Justice Leadership. The campus is located in a diverse and vibrant city in southwest Michigan, midway between Chicago and Detroit on the ancestral, historical, and contemporary land of the Council of the Three Fires—the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi peoples. Kalamazoo College acknowledges the enduring relationship that exists between the People of the Three Fires and this land. The Kalamazoo area encompasses a community of 335,000 which supports several college and university campuses along with numerous civic arts and cultural associations, and it is the home of the Kalamazoo Promise. Thirty-five miles from Lake Michigan, the area offers many opportunities for outdoor activities.

Completed applications received by April 3, 2023, will receive full consideration, with later applications reviewed as needed until the position is filled. Applications should include (1) a cover letter, (2) a curriculum vitae, (3) a statement of teaching experience and philosophy, and (4) a statement addressing commitments, content, and pedagogical approaches designed to foster the success of underrepresented students. Additional materials (syllabi, teaching evaluations, graduate and undergraduate transcripts, and three letters of recommendation) will be requested later in the application process. Please submit all materials in PDF format electronically at the link provided. All correspondence and questions regarding this position should be directed to the search chair, Dr. Amelia Katanski (Amelia.Katanski@kzoo.edu).

Kalamazoo College encourages candidates who will contribute to the cultural diversity of the College to apply and identify themselves if they wish. We are an Equal Opportunity Employer.
