Position Description

Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs ( AVPAA ), and working with a Community of Practice, the Faculty Director for Service-Learning Excellence will oversee the Service-Learning Excellence ( SLE ) program, which is a part of the Experiential, Career, and Community Engaged Learning (EXC2EL) Center. The SLE community of practice, which will be comprised of a faculty representative from each college, will be jointly chaired by the Faculty Director and the Assistant Vice President for Curriculum and Academic Programs. The Faculty Director is responsible for overseeing the design, implementation, management, and evaluation of service-learning projects and partnerships, as well as promotes programs and coordinates student involvement and university/community support for those opportunities. The Faculty Director serves as a liaison and regular collaborator with staff, faculty, and representatives of community organizations. Further, the Faculty Director provides information, advice, and support to faculty and staff members in the areas of service-learning and community engagement. The Faculty Director is also responsible for and provides resources and training for students and faculty related to community outreach, service-learning, risk management, and program safety. This position is open to current Texas State University faculty as described above only.

Working with the Assistant Vice President for Curriculum and Academic Programs and the Community of Practice, the faculty director will:
• Provide administrative leadership and support services for service-learning activities at Texas State University
• Monitor all administrative aspects of the program including budget development, office resources, records management, etc.
• Provide service-learning direction, coordination, planning, design, and management
• Participate in creating assessment tools and evaluates service-learning initiatives
• Serve as a liaison between staff, faculty, and the community.
• Develop programming and professional development for faculty, students, postdocs, and staff involved or interested in community engagement and/or conducting service-learning in conjunction with relevant academic leadership (e.g., staff or faculty in Offices of Faculty Development, etc.).
• Propose, develop, and implement programs and initiatives to advance the University’s and community partner’s mutual goals and interests, such as internship opportunities for students.
• Provide resources and training for students and faculty related to safety and liability issues involved in service-learning
• Develop and implement a strategic plan to advance meaningful community engagement that aligns with and leverages Texas State University’s planning and resources, including research and teaching, in collaboration with faculty and academic administration.
• Oversee, strengthen, and enhance mutually beneficial partnerships between community partners and Texas State University students, faculty, and staff.
• Work across the University to coordinate existing and new community engagement efforts, to strengthen and amplify impact and to minimize overlap and community burden
• Assess and enhance relationships with current community partners, and in alignment with the University’s strengths and strategic priorities, develop new constructive and purposeful relationships with partners.
• Perform other duties as assigned

• Opportunity to gain supported administrative experience (e.g., budget, purchasing, and administrative support) thus allowing specific focus on SLE initiatives.

Required Qualifications

Service-Learning or community engagement research experience.
Experience in program planning and assessment.
Demonstrated experience as a faculty student organization advisor.

Preferred Qualifications

• Faculty member at the rank of senior lecturer, assistant, associate, or professor at Texas State University.
• Demonstrated teaching experience in the Texas State Service-Learning Excellence program for three or more semesters.
• Demonstrated experience as a scholar/researcher.
• Demonstrated active involvement in community activities. Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Demonstrated skills in successfully supervising and evaluating staff and/or student workers.
• Demonstrated effective planning and collaboration with stakeholders.
