Job Description

The College of Health Solutions is recruiting an engaged higher education professional to join us as an Student Support Specialist. This position will provide individualized support for undergraduate students, and is located primarily at the Downtown Phoenix campus with a recurring commute to other campuses. This position is a key contributor to increasing student retention and graduation and will support students in making timely progress toward a degree through a range of in-person and online support strategies.

 

Counsels and confers with students within a program of study and with prospective students; provides program procedures, policies, goals and objectives, technical guidance and problem resolution.

Salary Range

$42,016 - $47,000 per year, DOE

Essential Duties

  • Work closely and collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff to ensure academic success.
  • May act as college/department liaison to current students, faculty, staff, and external groups on issues related to academic success.
  • Work under limited or minimal supervision, handle problems, provide guidance and advice to students.
  • Respond to student questions and concerns; work with students to resolve all issues to ensure ongoing satisfaction with program and successful progress to completion.
  • Connect students with academic and personal resources including, but not limited to: tutoring, counseling and career services; provide follow up to ensure satisfaction with and effectiveness of services.
  • Work collaboratively and collegially with academic units and services throughout the university to facilitate comprehensive student support.
  • Utilize a variety of university data and programmatic direction to promote student academic success.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in field appropriate to area of assignment AND one year of administrative and appropriate program experience; OR, Five years of progressively responsible administrative and appropriate program experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

 

Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of a Master's degree in education/higher education or closely related field.
  • Experience working in academic advising for higher education, specifically with health degree seeking students.
  • Experience offering a high level of customer service that prioritizes the success of a student in their approach to academic advising and retention.
  • Experience working with undergraduate students and providing student success services.
  • Experience working with STEM and/or Health Degree seeking students
  • Experience working with financial aid and/or scholarships
  • Experience in rapidly adapting and effectively utilizing new technology, practices, policies and methods.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications (i.e., Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Experience using ASU technology to facilitate advising including DARS, PeopleSoft, Retention Dashboard, Salesforce, eAdvisor and critical tracking tools.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of ASU's academic structure and organization; academic programs, colleges, and departments university-wide

 

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions

The current training programs include behavioral health, biomedical diagnostics, biomedical informatics, exercise science, health promotion, health sciences, kinesiology, medical studies, nutrition, population health, science of health care delivery, and speech and hearing science. Our programs are offered at ASU's Downtown Phoenix, Tempe, Polytechnic, West and Lake Havasu campuses, as well as on Mayo Clinic's campus in north Phoenix.
