Department Summary

The Program of Asian American Studies (AAS), housed in the Department of Sociology and Interdisciplinary Social Sciences (SISS), at San José State University invites highly qualified and motivated applicants for a full-time, temporary teaching appointment.

AAS at San José State University was founded as a part of the student-led Ethnic Studies movements in the late-1960’s and 1970s. AAS is a growing program with a reputation for excellence in teaching, service, scholarship, and community engagement. The program has five full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty and a strong pool of lecturers, from esteemed teachers to community practitioners. AAS faculty are trained in various disciplines with distinct community and research interests that contribute to a vibrant community of activist scholars. Moreover, AAS currently serves over one thousand students a year in the General Education program, with additional plans to grow into a major in the next few years. AAS is one of three units at San José State that offers courses under AB 1460 and the Area F CSU Ethnic Studies requirement .

Brief Description of Duties

  • Carry the equivalent of 15 WTU each semester (i.e., a full-time position) to be fulfilled through teaching courses in Asian American Studies (most are 3 WTUs) and/or other service obligations as needed within the program for a three-year appointment;
  • Teach and/or develop GE Area F courses, per the CSU GE Breadth Requirements (EO 1100). See the SJSU Academic Catalog for Area F description and courses;
  • Collaborate with colleagues to build robust and responsive Asian American Studies program and contribute to the cross-department Ethnic Studies Collaborative to ensure the continued growth of Ethnic Studies at San José State University;
  • Performance of instructional responsibilities that extend beyond duties in the classroom and include activities such as the following: preparation for class, evaluation of student performance, syllabus preparation and revision, holding weekly office hours based on assigned teaching unit load, review of current literature and research in the subject area, regular assessment of course and program learning outcomes and pedagogical improvements;
  • The candidate must demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement;
  • Faculty shall organize all their classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS);
  • All classes must be offered and meet as scheduled throughout the entire semester or term, in the mode assigned and listed in the schedule of classes.

Required Qualifications

  • A Master’s degree in Asian American Studies or related discipline to teach lower-division courses;
  • Experience teaching courses such as Introduction to Asian American Studies and Asian American History and Politics;
  • Prior teaching experience at the college or university level;
  • Ability to furnish evidence of excellence in teaching in Asian American Studies;
  • Available for in-person teaching modality;
  • Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching and other comparable experience;
  • Experience with or willingness to complete General Education assessment, as needed for the Asian American Studies Program.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Ph.D. degree in Ethnic Studies or related discipline;
  • Substantive evidence of supporting, cultivating, generating, and integrating a broad spectrum of diverse perspectives into teaching and practice in the field of Ethnic Studies or Asian American Studies;
  • Ability to teach effectively online;
  • Experience working with racially diverse students in the classroom, and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of groups within higher education, and the profession, shape patterns of participation and outcomes;
  • Demonstrated engagement with the Association of Asian American Studies or other similar associations.

Campus Security Authority


Pursuant to the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act) and CSU systemwide policy, the faculty coach member in this position is subject to ongoing review for designation as a Campus Security Authority (CSA). Individuals designated as Campus Security Authorities are required to immediately report Clery incidents to the institution and to complete Clery Act training as determined by the University Clery Director. Compensation

Compensation and salary range placement are determined by qualifications and experience. To learn more about range placement, please see University Policy S21-2 . Anticipated hiring ranges:

2/L-A: $4530 - $6000

3/L-B: $5405 - $6800

4/L-C: $6190 - $7900

5/L-D: $7800 - $8800

Ranges are the anticipated monthly salary rate of full-time AY faculty--part-time rates are prorated. There are 6 monthly payments per semester (full-time AY annual salary = rate x 12). See the Faculty Salary Schedule for more information.

To receive full consideration, applications should be received by March 31, 2023. This is a three-year appointment, renewable contingent upon availability of work and satisfactory job performance. CFA order of assignment 12.29 is applicable to lecturer faculty positions.


Conditional Offer


The work for this faculty position is located in the State of California. Employment is contingent upon proof of eligibility to work in the United States. Proof of immunization against COVID-19 or proof of a medical or religious exemption and compliance with testing protocols is required for employment. Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Appointment is contingent upon budget and enrollment considerations and subject to order of assignment provisions in the collective bargaining agreement between California State University and California Faculty Association. These provisions state the “Order of Work,” or the order in which available courses must be assigned to faculty, starting with tenure line faculty and ending with new lecturer appointees.
