Postdoctoral Fellow - Applied Microbiology

Location: Rm. 228 LSF, Clemson, SC

Description

We are seeking a highly motivated candidate to fill a postdoctoral fellow position to study the efficacy of disinfectants used in food establishments and healthcare facilities. Specifically, the fellow will optimize pathogen recovery methods used on porous surfaces, develop protocols to test disinfectant efficacy against both viruses and bacterial endospores on porous surfaces, and investigate the effect of frequent antimicrobial usage on the physical and chemical properties of various surfaces. The data generated from the above innovative research will inform disinfection procedures that can be used in food establishments, healthcare facilities, and public spaces.

Candidates should be able to design and conduct microbiological studies that include culturing, detection, and isolation of human bacterial pathogens and be willing to learn techniques for virology studies and porous surface characterization. The postdoctoral fellow will work with a multi-disciplinary team who have expertise in food microbiology, food safety education, material science, virology, and disinfecting chemistry. The fellow will be expected to communicate results through abstracts and presentations, and publications in peer-reviewed journals. Opportunities to develop grantsmanship skills will be provided. The fellow is expected to assist the PI (Dr. Xiuping Jiang, a Food Microbiologist) on lab management, supervision, and interaction with graduate and undergraduate students.

In addition to these primary projects, the postdoctoral fellow will also have opportunities to interact with industry collaborators and contribute to ongoing research projects funded by the industry.
