The ideal candidate will lead a robust suite of College fundraising programs and activities, as well as serve as the Executive Director of the 501(c)3 SLCC Foundation.
Job Summary:
Salt Lake Community College, Utah’s most diverse institution of higher education, seeks an experienced and dynamic Executive Director of Development and the SLCC Foundation. The ideal candidate will lead a robust suite of College fundraising programs and activities, as well as serve as the Executive Director of the 501(c)3 SLCC Foundation.
Reporting to the Vice President of Institutional Advancement, this position provides leadership and supervision for a team of development professionals and includes setting strategy, planning and providing direction for all areas of fundraising, including comprehensive fundraising campaigns and activities, business and corporate partnerships, alumni relations, and all other programs for private financial / philanthropic support and stewardship to support SLCC students, faculty, and staff, and the College at large.
Additionally, in collaboration with the Chair of the SLCC Foundation, the executive director supports this volunteer body to recruit and train Foundation board members, and develop strategic and annual operating plans, as well as financial fundraising goals to increase private support for SLCC scholarships and College programming and initiatives.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties:
- Direct a comprehensive development program for the College. Cultivate and steward individual donors and develop and implement a variety of fundraising strategies including major gifts, planned/legacy gifts, private and corporate foundation gifts, gift annuities, alumni relations, employee giving, and annual fundraising efforts (including SLCC Day of Giving). Implement fundraising and external relations efforts including developing operational plans, donor research, proposal writing and solicitation, engaging with existing and potential donors, and cultivating non-traditional funding sources. Oversee development-related events including annual scholarship lunch, golf tournament, networking receptions, and donor-recognition events. Recruit, hire, train, motivate and supervise a competent and qualified staff of development professionals. Set fundraising metrics and monitor employee portfolios to meet established prospect and financial goals. Ensure that all development activities are within budget limitations, fiscally well-managed, and cost effective. Conduct personal and meaningful face-to-face visits with donors and prospective donors each month. Active management of a development portfolio of major gift donors and prospects. Support the Vice President of Institutional Advancement and President of the SLCC in engaging a portfolio of prospects and donors, including determining the best strategy for cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. Work closely with SLCC senior administrators to promote constituent engagement, and build scholarship and business partnerships, ensuring coordination of efforts and consistency of messaging in order for SLCC to build a strong community image. Supervise the production and publication of fundraising collateral materials, including proposals, brochures, presentations, and electronic media. Prepare development staff and college operations for a comprehensive fundraising campaign to support the college’s strategic plan and alternative revenue source metrics. Serve as Executive Director of the SLCC Foundation. Work directly with the chair and executive committee to develop financial and fundraising goals and increase philanthropic support for the college. Ensure the fiscal integrity of the SLCC Foundation, including submission of proposed annual budget and monthly financial statements, which accurately reflect the financial condition of the foundation, to the Board. Facilitate bi-monthly Foundation Board meetings, Investment committee meetings, and occasional foundation retreats and receptions.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor of Arts degree or Bachelor of Science degree required
Demonstrated experience in all major aspects of fundraising including planning, development, and successful implementation and outcome of these activities required.
Demonstrated success in fundraising required. Record of achievement in cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major gifts from individuals, foundations, and corporations.
Minimum of 5 years direct development experience, at least three years of which must have been in a leadership or supervisory position.
Preferred Qualifications:
Understanding of community college fundraising operations/challenges
Higher education experience preferred and / or serving in a Hispanic Serving Institution and/or a Minority Serving Institution preferred
Master’s degree preferred
Blackbaud experience preferred
CFRE preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Experience and ability to use technology, word processing, spreadsheets. Experience in Microsoft office projects and Blackbaud NXT fundraising software.
Experience using development principles and best practices, as well as ability to understand and stay current in national fundraising standards and trends, as well as the development opportunities in Utah and the Salt Lake Valley, especially in higher education
General knowledge of contracts and grant-writing
Ability to identify prospects for major gifts
Passion for the mission of Salt Lake Community College and the communities served, including an understanding of, and appreciation for, the nature and value of a diverse, public, nonprofit educational institution
Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people and all abilities in order to create exceptional working relationships across the College. Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic background of community college students, faculty and staff, including those with disabilities.
