The Dean of the Graduate School is a full-time (1.0 FTE), 12-month position that provides leadership and oversight to all aspects of graduate education at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS). The Dean leads the Graduate School in its mission to offer resources, create opportunities, and promote excellence so that our graduate students, faculty, and staff are successful. Working within a framework of shared governance, the Dean will lead the Graduate School in advancing the quality of graduate academic programs, graduate student research, and collaborations. The Dean is an articulate advocate and spokesperson for Graduate Programs, working effectively with students, staff, faculty, other Deans, campus leadership, and community partners. The Dean also supports the core strategy of the UCCS 2030 Strategic Plan related to equity, diversity, and inclusion by fostering an accessible, supportive environment and an educational experience that recognizes diversity and cultural competence as integral components of academic excellence.

Job Duties:

The Dean of the Graduate School provides leadership and management for the Graduate School and all activities that interface with the Graduate School from recruitment to graduation. The Dean will work with UCCS colleges and subsequent campus constituents to:

  • Foster programs, policies, and procedures that improve graduate student recruitment, admission, enrollment, retention, degree completion, professional opportunities, and overall success including the creation of new graduate programs.

  • Oversee graduate fellowships, scholarships, and assistantships.

  • Call and preside over the meetings of the Graduate Executive Committee.

  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive database of admitted, incoming, and current graduate students and their funding support sources.

  • Ensure that all graduate programs are in compliance with Graduate School policies and procedures.

  • Serve as a member of the Deans Council, Associate Deans Council, Administrative Council, and other committees and work groups that need a graduate education advocate and representative.

  • Recommend and develop new policies, as necessary, for approval by the Graduate Executive Committee, Deans’ Council, Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs, and the campus.

  • Stay abreast of national trends and developments in graduate higher education and share and promote this information. 

  • Collaborate with the Enrollment Management team to coordinate all efforts of recruitment, admissions processes, and enrollment, and for Online Graduate Education on the development of micro-credentials, graduate certificates, and other graduate offerings that develop new educational opportunities for a wide range of graduate students.

  • Represent UCCS at state, regional, and national organizations concerned with graduate education.

  • Conduct outreach to local industries for training opportunities and collaborations.

  • Appoint faculty to the graduate faculty and appoint ad hoc graduate faculty committees as necessary.

  • Review and verify graduate courses.

  • Be an advocate for graduate education and diverse student groups, working with other offices to ensure graduate education and student needs are represented, known, and met.

  • Compile campus data and conduct data projects about graduate education and the graduate student experience, sharing results with programs and colleges.

  • Pursue sponsored program funding to support the mission of the graduate school.

  • Coordinate due process for graduate student academic and code of conduct appeals.

  • Oversee the general operation of the Graduate School office.

  • Oversee media communications for and from the Graduate School.

  • Promote cooperative and beneficial relationships among the departments, schools, colleges, and extended studies.

Work Location: This position will be expected to work on-site at the UCCS Campus with remote work as negotiated with the Provost & Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs

This position has been determined to be exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

What We Offer:

Salary Range: $140,785.40 - $177,000

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

Tentative Search Timeline:

  • Priority will be given to applications submitted by April 2nd, 2023. However, this posting will remain open until filled.

  • The potential dates for interviews with the search committee will be the week of April 17th.

  • The potential dates for an on-campus finalist interview will occur between the days of April 24th to May 11th

  • The potential employee start date is July 1st, 2023

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A terminal degree in their field of study from an accredited institution.
  • Have a record of teaching, scholarly/creative work, and leadership and service sufficient to merit appointment as a tenured full professor in a college at UCCS.
  • Demonstrated successful experience in academic leadership within higher education.
  • Evidence of sustained excellence in teaching graduate students, advisement and mentorship of graduate students, and supervision of graduate student research.
  • Experience in the development, implementation, and oversight of graduate programs.
  • Strong understanding of higher education and the academic environment of graduate education.
  • Experience mentoring graduate faculty and staff.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and leadership in equity, inclusiveness, diversity, and belonging.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with:
    • Improving and enhancing graduate program quality
    • Online course delivery and implementation
    • Developing graduate micro-credentials, certificates, badging, etc.
    • Strategic enrollment and retention activities
    • Assessment strategies
  • Demonstrated use of shared governance in decision making process.

 Physical Requirements:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to remain still and move.

  • Tasks may involve using a computer screen continuously for long periods of time.

  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
