The Senior Director Planning and Business Operations for Notre Dame Research (NDR) serves as an advisor and a key member of the Vice President for Research's (VPR) senior leadership team and drives development and implementation of short and long-term strategic decisions for University's research enterprise. This role also oversees the core functions essential to achieve the strategic goals of VPR including finance, operations, and human resources.
Planning and advising:
- Partners with VPR and the leadership team to shape VPR's strategic plans, ensuring overall alignment within the University.
- Builds clear understanding of VPR's vision, creates an atmosphere of coordination, and assists with strategy timelines, metrics, and deliverables.
- Assists VPR in addressing complex issues and making strategic decisions through: thought partnership, options and alternatives based on data, trends and benchmarking, risk assessments, and inputs from multiple sources.
- Builds relationships across the University to serve as a resource for VPR and works with others to resolve critical issues and move strategic priorities forward.
Centers and Institutes:
- Assists VPR with Centers and Institutes strategy
- Oversees Center and Institute operations, including annual budget planning, faculty and staff hiring, and other strategic initiatives.
- Provides evaluation metrics of C&Is and makes recommendations to VPR regarding C&I planning
Finance:
- This position serves as the chief financial officer of NDR and assumes a major role in decision-making, policy formulation, and strategic planning.
- Oversees NDR financial portfolio, providing financial analysis to VPR for integrated, short- and long-range resource planning.
- Oversees development and presentation of NDR financial information to Provost and other campus administrators.
- Resources internal seed funding competitions and other special NDR/VPR projects.
Human Resources:
- This position serves as the chief human resources officer of Notre Dame Research
- Leads human resources functions for the NDR Division, ensuring alignment with University Human Resource and Provost's office.
- Develops policies, best practices, and processes for hiring, terminations, performance management, calibration, and salary and merit recommendations,
- Ensures optimal operational effectiveness through targeted programs, including management development training for supervisors, managers, and researchers, onboarding for new hires, and staff retention initiatives, and development of professional pathways
- Leads a diverse, equitable and inclusive environment for all members of NDR community.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree
- 7+ years of relevant financial experience
- 5+ Years Leadership experience
- Strong financial management skills; experience doing financial projections
- Ability to analyze and interpret institutional and external policies and regulations
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s Degree in Business or related field preferred; experience in a higher education or similar environment preferred.
