Scope of Job:
To oversee, manage and provide direction of all daily activities in the area of Pharmacy.

Description of Duties:
  • Evaluates, interprets, compounds, and dispenses medications and other pharmaceutical supplies according to written orders/prescriptions issued by an authorized prescriber.
  • Ensures accuracy in dispensing drugs and supplies in accordance to organizational policies, completing documentation and records, assisting clinicians with drug treatment plans and service resource for pharmaceutical issues.
  • Ensures safe, appropriate, cost-effective medication therapies for patients according to established policies, procedures and protocols.
  • Counsels patients on their prescriptions, explaining doses, side effects, or potential interactions with other medications.
  • Participates in the strategic planning of budgeting and financing of the Pharmacy Department.
  • Responsible for coordinating the procurement and storage, inventory levels of medications and supplies.
  • Requisitions pharmaceutical materials and meets with pharmaceutical representatives regarding new drugs and other products.
  • Evaluates and clarifies medication orders or prescriptions with prescribers.
  • Collaborates with physicians or other care providers to promote positive patient outcomes through the use of appropriate pharmaceuticals.
  • Identifies, strives to prevent, assesses, and resolves medication related problems to ensure a safe patient outcome.
  • Supervises and manages the operation of the pharmacy, including inventory control, controlled substance record keeping, and maintenance of drug information materials.
  • Addresses quality improvement opportunities while participating in various UT Health RGV committees.
  • Responsible for overseeing and/or managing activities associated with study drugs including drug receipt, drug storage, study randomization, study blinding, study drug dispensing, study drug destruction, study drug documentation, monitor visits, study drug order building per protocol, and following associated research policies.
  • Consults with physicians, nurses, and other health professionals in evaluating the methods, procedures, and services of the pharmacy and makes recommendations for changes as appropriate.
  • Supervises, manages, orients, trains, and evaluates all assigned personnel.
  • Develops and maintains departmental policies and procedures.
  • Serves as liaison between the pharmacy and university personnel, other agencies/departments.
  • Demonstrates patient centered/patient valued behaviors.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable laws, regulatory and accreditation requirements.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Supervision Received:
General supervision from assigned supervisor.

Supervision Given:
Direct supervision of assigned staff.

Required Education:
Doctor of Pharmacy or Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy from an accredited school of pharmacy.

Preferred Education:
None.

Licenses/Certifications:
Current license by the appropriate State Board of Pharmacy. By the start date, license to practice in Texas will be required.

Required Experience:
Five (5) years of experience as a pharmacist.

Preferred Experience:
None.

Equipment:
Use of standard office and pharmaceutical equipment. Knowledge of pharmacy software systems such as Pyxis.

Working Conditions:
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Office/healthcare environment; some travel and weekend work is required. May be exposed to potentially hazardous and toxic substances. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley.

Ability to manage a team. Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written).
