Catholic University of America, Senior Vice Provost for Research

The Catholic University of America, a Carnegie R2 research university, seeks an ambitious and strategic leader with a record of building competitive research programs to take on the newly created position of Senior Vice Provost for Research. The SVPR will provide a strategic vision while directing and guiding the University’s research operations and contributing to the national research agenda.

The SVPR will advance collaborative research partnerships with federal agencies, corporations, foundations, other universities, and research networks to support the scholarly efforts of the talented and dedicated faculty and staff across programs in engineering, science, nursing, social and behavioral sciences, education, business, humanities, and the fine and performing arts. Reporting to the Provost, and with a University-wide goal of moving from a R2 to a R1 research university, the SVPR will partner with academic leadership, institute and center directors, faculty, and staff to enhance a strong culture of institutional support for scholarly and creative activities that will drive forward Catholic's research enterprise.

Catholic spends approximately $38.2 million on research annually. In 2021, the University received a $64 million research award from NASA to fund a cooperative agreement among CUA’s Institute for Astrophysics and Computational Sciences and five other local university partners.

The Senior Vice Provost for Research will support the development and implementation of high-quality research initiatives and foster a culture of research excellence among faculty, students, and staff involved in research and related activities.

As the chief research officer, the SVPR will steward campus research resources to foster research and creative activity, including the distribution of funds for research centers and institutes, equipment, facilities, faculty startups, bridge funding, and other internal research awards. The SVPR will also interact with counterparts at other universities to facilitate collaborations that enhance campus connections with leading universities and other national and international research community partners to further solidify the University’s research reputation. The SVPR will work in close partnership with academic deans and with other university officers to enhance research, including the identification of external funding opportunities from federal, state, business, industry, and private sources.

The ideal candidate will have a background in research, including the stewardship and administration of major external fund sources in a university setting, notably sponsored research and private philanthropy.
