Dean, School of Humanities and Social Sciences
Job Description
Reporting directly to the Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs, the Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences serves as the chief administrative officer for the School of Humanities and Social Sciences and provides strategic oversight of degree and certificate programs and related coursework in communication, education, fine arts, human services, general studies, liberal arts, and social sciences. The Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences works collaboratively with the college’s academic and student affairs leadership team, faculty, and regional partners to ensure that academic programming supports learners’ success in transfer and career placement outcomes. The Dean provides visionary leadership for the school, builds and supports a robust faculty team invested in engaging and innovative teaching and learning, and directs development of new transfer and career pathways. Compensation and Benefits
The salary range for the position is $74,895 to $125,000 per year, however, actual starting salary will commensurate with education and/or experience. The position is a 12 month professional faculty role and as such is eligible for the benefits package offered by the Commonwealth of Virginia for state agencies and the Virginia Community College System. KSA's/Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree in a discipline within the School of Humanities and Social Sciences Demonstrated full-time (or equivalent) college-level teaching experience. Demonstrated academic administrative experience, including academic program development, curricular assessment and revision, course scheduling, enrollment and retention management, and data analysis. Demonstrated ability to promote, nurture, and maintain a culture of excellence in teaching and learning, versed in evidence-based teaching and learning pedagogies and distance learning modalities and technologies. Demonstrated experience leading academic initiatives in collaboration with faculty either by direct supervisory experience or through committee or governance bodies. Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion for ensuring success of all students. Evidence of positive working relationships with faculty, students, staff, and other professionals and college stakeholders, internally and externally. Excellent human relations skills, written and oral communication skills, negotiation and conflict management skills with myriad audiences (students, parents, executive leadership, faculty, student affairs professionals, external audiences, etc.).

- Doctorate at time of appointment, or significant post-master’s education in a subject within the division. Community college teaching and/or administrative experience Experience designing transfer and career pathways Experience with early college/dual enrollment initiatives

Required Travel
Travel as per any required duties of the position, such as to sites/campuses and any required training. Ability to cover assignments throughout the college service region as necessary for the job is required.
