Overview
School in the Park is an innovative program that shifts the location of “school” from a traditional classroom setting in an inner-city school, to the resources and educational opportunities available at museums in Balboa Park. A relevant instructional environment is created as hands-on learning challenges students to become active participants in their own education. Rosa Parks Elementary School and Wilson Middle School participate in a program that is designed to fully utilize the unique educational opportunities of San Diego's cultural institutions in Balboa Park. The plan allows students to spend up to eight weeks in the Park, where they participate in week-long educational programs at nine institutions. Visits to these institutions brings meaning to the printed page as many of the students do not have prior knowledge about the variety of subjects covered in their school materials. Hence, School in the Park engages students in learning that has real world connections.

The facilitator (instructional assistant) for School in the Park, works both independently and under the direction of the SITP Admin team. The person must be able to function collaboratively, working in concert with other adults to ensure students are safe and learning within the program. Specifically, facilitators:

● Act as liaisons between museum, school personnel, and SITP staff.

● Assist educators in providing a rich and rewarding educational experience for students. They support the museum educator's instruction and supervise assigned lessons with small groups of students.

● Ensure the safety of students while at the Park and on the bus. Facilitators supervise students while on the bus and as they walk between the bus and the museum; walk students to restrooms; and walk students to and from lunch. They supervise lunch at the school site and also supervise groups of students when they are outside the museum classroom.

● Lead the class for ten minutes while the museum educator and classroom teacher collaborate; lead the SITP Motto and activities as assigned.

● Assist in conducting assessments as needed.

● Assist students and museum educators in the use of technology within the various SITP learning environments.

● Assist with dismissal of classes back at the school site at the end of the day.

● Ensure medication is available when needed and gets to proper location at end of day.

● Contact parents when necessary.

● Attend trainings and meetings throughout the year.
