Maintain Linux computers for the School of Engineering and Applied Science. Purchase, install, configure, and maintain Linux servers, cloud systems, storage appliances, HPC clusters, and desktop workstations.

Job Description

Under technical direction, maintain Linux computers for the School of Engineering and Applied Science. Purchase, install, configure, and maintains Linux servers, cloud systems, storage appliances, HPC clusters, and desktop workstations. Design, code, test, and document tools and utilities. Install and test software applications. Respond to automated monitoring alerts and customer requests and questions, diagnosing and resolving problems. Perform performance monitoring, shutdowns, and reboots. Monitor security announcements and ensure systems are patched regularly.

Linux Systems Administrator C: In addition to above: Under general direction, work directly with faculty and supervisor to plan system administration strategy. Gather requirements for IT systems hardware and configuration, plan their implementation, propose solutions. Contribute to system security design and incident response. Develop and maintain configuration/change management tools for Linux and other systems. Manage system performance; respond to problems with machine room facilities. Lead individual server projects and serve as subject matter expert on some technologies.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or a related field and at least 1 year (Linux Systems Administrator C: at least 2 years) of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Strong interpersonal and written communication skills to be able to interact effectively daily with very tech-savvy faculty and students. Strong background with Linux (especially Linux administration) and experience programming with high-level scripting languages. Experience with configuration management (Ansible), revision control (git), or cloud services (AWS) is a plus.

On-call contact may be required during non-business hours to respond to urgent, high priority, and escalated service issues or outages. This includes the potential for both evening and weekend hours.
