Position Description

The Department of Sociology at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) invites applications for a Tenured position at the rank of Associate or Full Professor (Academic Year) with appointment as Department Chair, starting in Fall 2023.

The Sociology Department

The Department of Sociology at CSUDH is committed to its mission of sociology in service to the community. The department is composed of a diverse, innovative and stimulating faculty who teach and pursue research in a variety of areas that are important in today's global societies. The sociology faculty offers undergraduate and graduate programs with several emphases that respond directly to the needs of today's students. The Position

The Department of Sociology at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) invites applications for a Tenured Associate or Professor position to serve as the Chair of the Sociology Department with the appointment starting in Fall 2023. BIPOC and women faculty encouraged to apply

Responsibilities

Managing and supervising faculty and staff, scheduling, staffing, coordinating and facilitating department meetings, managing and advocating for department resources, evaluating faculty and staff. Create and maintain an academic and collegial environment that fosters excellence in teaching, research, and community service. This appointment may entail other duties deemed appropriate for a department chair. The Chair works with department colleagues to develop a vision

and strategic planning for the department. The Chair is also responsible for facilitating the development of the curriculum; leads recruitment and retention of students; facilitates in consultation with faculty the recruitment of faculty. The Chair represents the department on the College Council and to university and external constituencies. The Chair is responsible for mentoring faculty as well as overseeing the development of department policies and procedures.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications
  • Applicants must have experience in teaching and working with colleagues from diverse, racial/ethnic age, socioeconomic, cultural, and academic backgrounds.
  • A Ph.D. in Sociology from an accredited University.
  • Evidence of the ability to evaluate curricular and instructional service provided to students to ensure quality.
  • Evidence of a commitment to help build our vision within the department, the university, and the larger community.
  • Experience in teaching undergraduates and graduate students from diverse age, racial/ethnic, socioeconomic, cultural, and academic backgrounds
  • Evidence of strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills and effective conflict resolution skills.
  • Evidence of commitment to shared governance.

  • Preferred Qualifications
    • Three or more years of service as a department chair, program coordinator, or other university leadership position
    • Experience working in the CSU
    • Full Professor at time of hire
    • Evidence of experience in resolving conflicts in an academic setting
    • Evidence of successfully planning and executing strategic, innovative initiatives
    • Experience working within a collective bargaining environment
    • Experience with working with BIPOC students
    • Experience with change management, strategic planning and faculty, staff, and student development
    • Teaching and research areas within the department curriculum (e.g., Criminology, Community Studies, Race, Ethnicity, Family, Aging, Research Methods, or Education)
    • Curriculum development and program modification
    • Budget experience
    • Retention, Tenure, and Promotion at the department, college, or university levels.
    • Collaboration with university partners (e.g., Academic Senate, Grants and Sponsored Projects, Undergraduate Research)
    • Mentorship/collaboration with students and faculty
    • Active research, teaching, and service activities at department, college, or university levels.
    • Evidence of program and/or grant development

    Employment Requirement

    Background Check

    Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

    Additional Information

    The Associate Professor (Academic Year) classification salary range is $6,190 to $13,172 per month (12 monthly payments per academic year), and the full Professor (Academic Year) classification salary range is $7,794 to $ 13,797 per month (12 monthly payments per academic year). Additional compensation for the Academic Year (AY) Department Chair role is based on Academic Year faculty salary and the fractional time base designated for this academic department as well as a stipend for summer chair work that is based on this fractional time base. Rank and salary will depend on qualifications, experience, and academic discipline. Salary is subject to budgetary authorization and any California State University System faculty contract increases. Summer research grants, moving expenses, start‐up funds, and a reduced teaching load may be available. An excellent comprehensive benefits package is available that includes: health/vision/dental plans; spouse, domestic partner and dependent fee‐waiver; access to campus child‐care; and a defined‐benefit retirement through the state system along with optional tax sheltering opportunities.
