Position Description

The Department of Theatre and Dance at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) invites applications for a Tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor (Academic Year) with the appointment starting in Fall 2023.

Department of Theatre and Dance

The Theatre & Dance Program offers courses in the fields of acting, dance, directing, choreographing, design and technical theatre, theatre and dance history, dramatic literature, speech, and others. Course requirements for both the major and the minor programs provide for flexibility and allow students considerable choice in planning their academic careers.

Theatre and Dance Majors and Minors participate in the department's ambitious production program through acting, dance, design and construction, lighting, costume, stage management, and other areas. Academic credit is provided for such participation.

The Position

Assistant Professor in Theatrical Design and Technology

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include teaching courses to diverse undergraduates including the following: Fundamentals of Theatre Design, Stagecraft, Scenic Design, Lighting and Sound, Stage Management, Theatre Workshop, Dance Production, and General Education classes. The position will include designing scenery/props for theatre and dance productions for the academic year. The position may include the ability to design and teach in up to two areas of technical theatre for example: a. scenery/props and lighting;

b. scenery/props and sound;

c. scenery/props and stage management

d. scenery/props and projections.

The position may include assisting with scenery, props, sound, lights, projections, or stage management for our outreach programing: Teatro, Mosaic, and New African Grove Black Theatre. Other duties include course and curriculum development, student advisement for Theatre majors, student mentoring for student costume design projects, participation in developing department procedures and guidelines, involvement in student recruitment, involvement in USITT, ACTF, and ACDA, and committee service at the department, college and university level. Faculty will be expected to continue their creative work and/or professional activities. Tenure and promotion requires faculty to maintain an active record of creative activities, including external professional projects.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

Applicants must have experience in teaching undergraduates and working with colleagues from diverse age, socioeconomic, cultural, and academic backgrounds including adoption of appropriate pedagogical strategies for diverse student populations;

MFA in Theatrical Design/Scenic Design or related discipline by the date of appointment with evidence of a minimum of two years of effective solo (non-teaching assistant) college teaching experience;

Ability to design for both theatre and dance with proficiency in Scenic Design and Properties;

Ability to teach upper division courses in one or more of the following specializations: stagecraft, scenic design, scene painting, properties, computer-aided design and model-making with period research; scene painting and is able to teach introductory theatre classes; and

Demonstrated supervisory and collaborative abilities; ability to adhere to production timeline with strong collaboration skills with the directors, choreographers, and other members of the design team a must;

Evidence of an active performance record or equivalent professional experience including a knowledge of multicultural theatre.

Preferred Qualifications

MFA/PhD in Theatrical Design/Scenic Design

A demonstrated record of excellent teaching and designing at the college/university level, community-based theatre, including proficiency in instructing undergraduates and working with colleagues from diverse age, socioeconomic, cultural, and academic backgrounds, through the adoption of appropriate pedagogical strategies for diverse populations;

Academic or Professional experience as scenic/prop designer including diverse or multicultural productions;

Academic or Professional experience as a lighting and/or sound designer or stage manager; with a demonstrated ability of projections as scenic elements;

Demonstrated record of teaching in the areas of stagecraft, scenic design, scene painting, and properties with experience in teaching lighting and sound design, sound editing/mixing; computer-aided design, model-making with period research, scenic painting, and properties and able to teach introductory theatre classes, and teaching online classes; and

Demonstrated experience in department/college/university service.

Employment Requirement

Background Check

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Additional Information

The Assistant Professor (Academic Year) classification salary range is $5,405 to $11,994 per month (12 monthly payments per academic year); salary for this position will be commensurate with experience and current CSUDH faculty salaries in the academic department/discipline. Faculty salaries are subject to budgetary authorization and any California State University System faculty contract increases. Summer research grants, moving expenses, start‐up funds, and a reduced teaching load may be available.
