Job Description:

The Admissions Counselor – International & Undergraduate Recruitment is a full-time, 12-month, administrative faculty exempt position based on-campus in the Office of Admissions at Colorado School of Mines.

This position reports to the Associate Director of Undergraduate Recruitment and is a member of the Undergraduate Recruitment Team. This position also closely collaborates with the Graduate International Admissions Recruiter. The Admissions Counselor – International & Undergraduate Recruitment will promote the goals and mission of Mines through the recruitment, admission, and enrollment of qualified, diverse international, and domestic undergraduate students.

This position will provide direct service for the academic support of prospective, new and continuing students, encourage and support student participation in all the campus community has to offer, academically and socially, and emphasize student retention to graduation. This position is primarily responsible for visiting high schools and community colleges, advising prospective students and their families on admission to Mines, evaluating applications for admission, encouraging enrollment and other general Admissions Office activities, and will thoroughly engage in international & domestic undergraduate recruitment efforts through actively communicating the benefits of a Mines education to prospective students, their parents, counselors, and other community organizations.


Recruitment, Admission and Enrollment (50%)

The Admissions Counselor – International will represent Mines at scheduled college recruitment programs/events and fairs. Required travel will include the state of Colorado, domestically in the United States, and some international destinations. In addition, this position is responsible for individual visits to selected high schools and community colleges throughout the academic year. This role will serve as the primary Admissions Office contact for international undergraduate students, their families, sponsors, and for a small domestic recruitment territory.

This position is responsible for independently making admission decisions and counseling international & domestic undergraduate students on the decisions of the Undergraduate Admissions Evaluation Team.

The Admissions Counselor – International & Undergraduate Recruitment , will work closely with Mines academic and administrative faculty and other personnel to facilitate the successful recruitment, admission, and enrollment of new students to Mines, with particular focus on prospective populations that are the strongest pipelines for the recruitment of diverse students. This position will routinely meet with prospective students and their families as part of the Admissions Office on-campus, individual and campus tour program.

Advisement normally includes a review of students’ academic progress and a candid assessment of students’ potential for admission and scholarship consideration. This position regularly counsels students and parents and serves as the key liaison to the high school guidance and external community organizations that serve the prospective student pipelines before and after admission, including through orientation and after enrollment.

Additionally, the Admissions Counselor – International & Undergraduate Recruitment will provide support for the fall and spring on-campus visitation programs hosted by Admissions. Responsibilities may include but are not limited to student registration, program set-up, presentation moderation and assisting in the preparation of marketing materials for the programs. The position may be asked to support other campus programs, such as high school counselor visits, counselor workshops, teacher enhancement programs, new student and parent orientation, as well as represent Mines through involvement with professional or community organizations that promote a similar mission to that of the Mines Office of Admissions. Evening and weekend work are expected for this position.

This position will be at the forefront of international admissions document collection and credential evaluation. This will be to assure the completion of often complex international undergraduate applications, which includes:
  • Verifying and evaluating foreign and domestic academic credentials, including transcripts, test scores, letters of recommendation, essays and the like.
  • Coach within areas immigration and visa processes
  • Create and maintain records, enter data, and validate data in Slate and other required databases/systems
Admissions Liaison with the ISSS, Study Abroad/Student Exchange and Global Initiatives team (20%)

The Admissions Counselor – International & Undergraduate Recruitment will work closely with our ISSS and study abroad teams to ensure excellent interoffice communication, stay up to date on immigration, visa, and exchange processes and procedures, and identify potential efficiencies and improvements within the prospective international student experience.

Recruitment Programs/Event Planning (20%)

The Admissions Counselor-International & Undergraduate Recruitment will be tasked with a pivotal event planning responsibility. This position is responsible for behind-the scenes program development, planning and day-of execution for several admissions programs/events. Some of these events may be geared toward a specific student population/type, held on or off-campus, and with a goal of recruiting and yielding the incoming class. These events will require working with campus partners at Mines, outside vendors and managing program budgets.

Additional Duties (10%)

Although Admissions operates on a seasonal ‘cycle,’ a lot of our work is subject to some unpredictability. The Admissions Counselor – International & Undergraduate Recruitment needs to be able to be flexible and adapt to the needs of the office and university. All other duties as assigned are a part of the admissions/higher education workplace.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Moderate amounts of demonstrated experience working with students, including those from an international background.
  • Strong public speaking, written and oral communication skills.
  • Applicants must possess excellent organizational and interpersonal skills and be highly detail oriented.
  • Travel needs of the position require successful applicants to be experienced working independently as well as within a team. Potential international travel requires a current passport.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree
  • Must possess excellent oral, written, and cross-cultural communication skills
  • Ability to complete assignments independently and meet changing deadlines
  • Knowledge of a second language
  • Knowledge or experience with Banner, Terra Dotta system, Slate CRM, online application systems, and/or online portfolio submission systems.
  • Experience in AACRAO Edge transcript evaluation software.

Total Rewards:

Mines is offering a salary range of $50,000 to $55,000.

Starting salary will be determined by the qualifications of the selected applicant balanced with departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information.
