FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

The Department of Africana, Puerto Rican and Latino Studies (https://hunter.cuny.edu/artsci/africana-and-puerto-rican-latino-studies/) at Hunter College of The City University of New York invites applications for an open rank faculty position specializing in African American Politics. This is a full-time tenure-track or tenured open-rank appointment as an assistant, associate, or full professor. The position will begin August 2023.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Develop and maintain an active research agenda and publication record in the field of African American politics.
• Teach several introductory, intermediate, and advanced level courses in the interdisciplinary field of Africana Studies with a focus on African American politics.
• Pursue professional development to remain current with scholarship in areas of research and teaching responsibility; contribute to long-term curricular development and offerings in the department.
• Serve on programmatic, departmental, divisional, and college committees as needed.

 

Located on the 68th Street campus on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, the Department of Africana, Puerto Rican and Latino Studies offers students a critical understanding of the political, cultural, social, and ideological forces that have shaped the experiences of people of African, Puerto Rican and Latino diasporas. Hunter College has both a teaching and a research mission.

QUALIFICATIONS

For Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor:

To qualify for this position, applicants should have earned a Ph.D. in Political Science, (or a related field such as Africana Studies, African American Studies or American Studies) with a specialization in African American Politics, demonstrated pedagogical success, scholarship or achievement, and an ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.

 

The Department seeks a candidate with expertise in African American politics with demonstrated research and teaching related to how racial state policies shapes Black citizenship, diverse forms of Black political participation, and how neighborhoods shape racial and political attitudes among Black Americans. We are particularly interested in applicants who can teach introductory and advanced-level courses in the field including but not limited to public policy, electoral politics, and or Black social movements.

 

The following qualifications are preferred: knowledge of the global African diaspora, a scholarly record illustrating rigorous research with respect to the political dimensions of African American communities, strong student and peer evaluations, a record of service, and commitment to mentoring students.

 

VACCINE REQUIREMENT

Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. Final candidates must be fully vaccinated as of their first day of employment.

 

COMPENSATION

Salary commensurate with academic accomplishments and experience within the range of the title.

Assistant Professor: $52,267 - $99,532

Associate Professor: $67,784 - $117,805

Full Professor: $83,878 - $141,858
