Job Description

 The Program Manager Sponsored Projects will join an impact-driven team focused on accelerating the global transition to a low-carbon economy and contribute to efforts that enable energy access in developing countries, mitigate climate change, and modernize the electric grid for improved resilience. The position within the Laboratory for Energy And Power Solutions (LEAPS), https://leaps.asu.edu, is under the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering and located at the Polytechnic campus, with collaborators and partnerships across the US and globe. The team is led by Dr. Nathan Johnson with a focus on translating use-inspired research into practical solutions for technology deployment, new policy and business models, and workforce development. Specific projects to manage will have both domestic and international focus, and involve a mix of federal and private sector sponsors and partners, with a high focus on impact-oriented outcomes.

 

The team has a broad set of subject matter expertise and life experiences, and thrives on finding creative solutions to challenging problems that often involves finding synergies across partners, perspectives, and goals. Essential Duties

  •  Develop program management plans; curate and oversee execution of program management plans during award; actively utilize program management tools (e.g., Smartsheet);
  • Work with LEAPS leadership to develop operational plans for the successful sustainment of a growing research and training portfolio;
  • Ask questions that engage teams and generate knowledge needed to create a comprehensive program management plan;
  • Maintain regular communication with project team members to ensure project timelines are met;
  • Develop an awareness for the connections between institutions, people, and concepts to help proactively manage expectations and avoid challenges;
  • Develop processes and expectation management that can adapt to changes in project goals, timelines, resources, and personnel;
  • Monitor, manage and maintain an in-depth understanding of program operations including research activities, external workforce development activities, and related business processes;
  • Organize and hold project kick-off to coordinate all internal and external partners;
  • Organize and hold project close-out debrief team with successes and lessons learned on completion of award;
  • Track status of opportunities for including leads, proposals, consulting, training, and other works;
  • Assist with development of budgets for proposals;
  • Plan and track human resource allocations to manage time expectations and avoid individuals from being overbooked and projects from being underbooked;
  • Track status of publications and marketing materials;
  • Manage marketing campaigns and public awareness efforts with support of a marketing student;
  • Track status of communications and engagements related to business development, marketing, and campaigns (e.g. Salesforce)Attend internal and external meetings; contribute to the discussion and provide operational perspective and support;
  • Interface with students, staff, faculty, university leadership and external parties;
  • Optional interests: organize and track technology transfer and scaling processes; assist with development of strategic plans for growing research and training; manage professional development plans and process for LEAPS personnel; manage LEAPS advisory group

 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related field and 7 years related experience; 4 of which include project management of technical or scientific endeavors.

 

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with US federal research and deployment agencies such as USAID, USTDA, DOE
  • Experience with non-federal agencies and private sector
  • Experience with ASU program management, proposal preparation, and financial management.
  • Experience with international research and programs.
  • Experience with program management software such as Smartsheet;
  • Experience in managing and delivering multiple priorities within tight time frames and deadlines.
  • Experience in managing multiple high-priority projects in a fast-paced environment, requiring considerable coordination and follow through.
  • Experience working with remote and international teams/organizations; dealing with ambiguity, differing time zones, and intercultural communications.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Evidence of a collaborative style, combined with the ability and desire to work in a team-based environment.
  • Experience in budget preparation, forecasting and management.
  • Experience in communications technologies, including website management oversight, video conferencing, e-mail and marketing platforms, social media platforms and the ability to prepare high quality PowerPoint presentations/video for partnership projects and outreach.

 

Working Environment

  • Activities are primarily performed in a regular, climate controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, standing, walking. 
  • Visual acuity and manual dexterity associated with daily use of desktop computer; bending, stooping, reaching and lifting up to 20 pounds. 
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential duties.
