Job Description Summary
The Division of Facilities and Real Estate Services (FRES) provides the expertise, business process, policies and standards required to plan, design, construct, operate, maintain and renew the physical assets of the University, excluding the health system. In addition, the Division, comprised of approximately five Departments, is responsible for the strategic planning, management and operation of non-academic University property, and collaborating with the neighborhood to create a safe, diverse and economically vibrant destination. With close to 12M square feet of space, FRES maintains 186 buildings on a campus of 276 acres, completes over 60,000 maintenance requests per year, and starts approximately 250 projects a year. FRES is comprised of the following Departments: Administration, Office of the University Architect, Design and Construction, Real Estate, Operations and Maintenance.

The University of Pennsylvania is implementing a campus transformation entitled Penn Connects (http://www.pennconnects.upenn.edu). This comprehensive, award winning effort is expanding the campus over the next 20 years, including the construction of new academic research and recreational facilities. Job Description

Sustainability Outreach and Engagement Intern

Position Summary:

The Sustainability Outreach & Engagement Intern will work closely with the Sustainability Office to assist in the coordination of outreach programs, strategic marketing and education initiatives, and operational research projects related to outreach and engagement. Summer internships with Penn's Sustainability Office are designed to give students exposure to a broad cross-section of the sustainability field, and in addition to managing hands-on projects and conducting research assignments, students will also be given many opportunities to learn throughout their experience.

Job Responsibilities / Duties:
  • Provide hands-on support and coordination for programs aimed at incoming and returning students: Move-In Green, New Student Orientation, and PennGreen Pre-Orientation
  • Support communications and analysis for Green Living program
  • Provide research support for Penn's Environmental Sustainability Advisory Committee (ESAC) and the University's Climate and Sustainability Action Plan 3.0
  • Provide marketing and communications support for strategic sustainability priorities, procurement of promotional sustainability items, and inventory management


Job Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:
  • Familiarity and general knowledge of broad issues pertaining to environmental sustainability, particularly around waste diversion, recycling, and compost
  • Strong writing, communication, and program coordination skills
  • Prior experience leading peers in student organizations
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to work well independently and in teams
  • Familiarity with sustainability community and programs at Penn preferred
  • Ability to research and compile information succinctly in reports


  • Student Must be currently enrolled in Higher Education.
  • Not Remote Eligible; Must work on-campus at Penn FRES.
  • This internship is for a Maximum of 12 weeks in duration.
  • Interns are required to bring their own Laptop; no hardware or software will be provided.

Targeted Pay Range: $15-$18/per hour

This Targeted Pay Range is only applicable to this job posting.

Pay rate will be commensurate with intern's year in higher education.
