Job Description
The Director of the Institute for STEM Experiential Learning provides a vision, strategy and plan for increasing the visibility of the Institute and expanding experiential learning and professional development opportunities for STEM undergraduate students. The Director mainly serves as a Corporate Liaison to develop and maintain relationships with STEM employers, organizations and agencies offering internships, externships, fellowships, job shadowing, mentoring, research, volunteer, and other experiential learning opportunities. The Director is responsible for leading a STEM advisory board and collaborating with key faculty members to develop a STEM badging/certificate program and comprehensive plans for integrating experiential learning activities within the STEM curriculum and courses.
To be successful, the Director should have a strong interest and background in science and/or experience in talent acquisition, recruiting, or employer and community relations.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Cultivate and strengthen new and existing partnerships with employers, community organizations, and agencies to
develop and expand STEM experiential learning and post-graduation employment opportunities.
- In collaboration with the Executive Director of CEEL, develop a strategic plan to achieve strong outcomes in the following areas: experiential learning, employer engagement, hiring and recruiting, faculty and student engagement, and data collection, analysis, and reporting.
- Collaborate with the Faculty Coordinator for STEM Faculty Development to introduce career-based learning activities within the STEM curriculum, such as: credited internships, case study courses and capstones, job simulations, field experiences, service learning, job shadowing, and volunteering experiences.
- Collaborate with the STEM Faculty Coordinator for Experiential Learning to develop a digital badging/certificate program for STEM work-study, internship, and research experiences.
- Create and lead a STEM Advisory Board consisting of industry professionals from outside the University. Plan quarterly meetings and provide oversight and support for advisory workstreams as needed.
- Actively engage employers and organizations to develop STEM workshops, employer information sessions, career fairs, networking sessions, and other career-related events.
- Conduct research on forecast hiring trends of STEM employers to identify requisite career-readiness and industry specific skills for STEM majors.
- Coordinate and facilitate workshops and class presentations for STEM majors on opportunities offered through the Institute.
- Serve on related University committees and professional associations.
- Participate in training and professional development activities as required.
- Work on special projects and other duties as assigned.
Qualification Standards
- Background in science or STEM field outside of a college/university setting
- Experience in corporate outreach and the ability to build and maintain successful strategic partnerships
- Welcoming, enthusiastic, and energetic demeanor with the ability to collaborate with internal teams and share information and professional contacts
- Must be able/willing to conduct external outreach and travel within NJ to meet with external city, county and State agencies to explore partnership opportunities for additional services
- High level of motivation, self-direction, and the ability to work independently
- Computer literacy and efficiency using Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) and the internet
- Comfortable with public speaking and giving presentations
- Strong written and verbal communications skills and effective time management skills
- Ability to prioritize and adjust to change
- Valid Driver’s License, NJ resident preferred
Education
Master’s or MBA degree strongly preferred
