Position Details
Duties Performed in the Usual Course of the Job
The Department of World Languages and Cultures ( WOLC ) at Sam Houston State University invites applications for a full-time non-tenure-track faculty member at the rank of Lecturer to teach introductory and intermediate (1000- and 2000- levels) American Sign Language ( ASL ) courses, with a 4/4 teaching load, starting August 2023.
Teaching responsibilities are at the main SHSU campus in Huntsville, Texas (located 70 miles north of Houston), and online. All members of the academic community share a responsibility for developing and maintaining an environment in which differences are valued and inclusiveness is practiced.
Educational Requirements for the Position
Must have an M.A. in ASL, Deaf Studies, or related field with a minimum of 18 graduate credit hours in American Sign Language and/or Deaf Studies. Candidates must demonstrate high degree of competence in both productive and receptive ASL skills.
Experience Required for the Position
Required Application Materials:

1) a cover letter clearly addressing teaching experience.
2) a full CV.
3) a copy of graduate transcripts (must include a minimum of 18 graduate credit hours in American Sign Language and/or Deaf Studies)
4) a statement of teaching philosophy.
5) evidence of teaching excellence (including student perceptions and peer/supervisor observation reports)
6) three (3) recent letters of recommendation (at least one letter should address candidate’s promise as a teacher).
If you cannot upload your letters of recommendation with your application materials, please indicate how they will be submitted (e.g., Interfolio, direct email, etc.).
All documents must be received by the deadline (March 19, 2023), including letters of recommendation, for the application to be considered.

- Knowledge of current concepts and methods in ASL learning and instruction, including those related to online course delivery and language learning technology.
- Online teaching experience and/or willingness to teach online courses.
- Outstanding interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated success working collaboratively with a team.
- Willingness to participate in and contribute to goals of the ASL and Deaf Studies program.
