Duties and Responsibilities

The Music Division in the Department of Fine and Performing Arts ( DFPA ) in the College of Arts and Sciences ( CAS ) at Loyola University Chicago ( LUC ) invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure-track position at the rank of Lecturer for academic year 2023–24, with the possibility of renewal contingent on performance and review. CAS / LUC provides opportunities for promotion based on demonstrated teaching excellence and service to the program, school, and university. The successful candidate will be joining a department with more than 30 full-time faculty members (six in music) and over 500 majors and minors (approximately 85 combined music majors and minors). The candidate will be expected to oversee and develop all aspects of the music history course sequence for music majors and minors, which currently includes Music History I, II, and III . The candidate will also teach a course to non-majors that explores the art of music listening and musical styles from cultures around the world. The teaching load is four courses per semester, which will include: conducting the Symphony Orchestra each semester; teaching two sections of the non-major course described above, The Art of Listening, each semester; teaching Music History II each spring semester; and teaching either Music History I or III in alternating fall semesters. Other possible courses may include: honors survey courses, applied conducting, and future courses in music history or musicology.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: A Ph.D. in music history or musicology is required at the time of appointment. Candidates should demonstrate a responsiveness toward and understanding of diverse student backgrounds, especially regarding socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, culture, ability/disability, sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity. Candidates must be willing to support the mission of LUC and the goals of a Jesuit Catholic education.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience working in the specialty area of music history is desirable, as is having experience as an orchestral conductor. Candidates for the position must clearly demonstrate the potential for excellence in teaching and performance and have a record of (or clear potential for) distinguished scholarship and student mentorship. The candidate should be willing to support the mission of LUC and the goals of a Jesuit Catholic Education.
