Summary of Job Duties:The Department of Music and Theatre at the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Theatre, Technical and Design beginning Fall 2023. The successful candidate will instruct undergraduate theatre courses with an emphasis in technical theatre and design, as well as other courses contingent upon the candidate’s expertise, interest, and department needs. Production duties include supervision and support of all design and production aspects of a 3-4 main-stage show season, working in coordination with the Technical Director to oversee shops, contracted designers, and work-study students. The successful candidate will help promote student recruitment and retention and also be active in creative and scholarly activity as well as service to the university, community, and profession. The position reports to the Department Head of Music and Theatre.

Qualifications:

Required Education and/or Work Experience: Master of Fine Arts in Theatre Technology, Design, Production or a related field.

Preferred Education and/or Work Experience: In addition to the required qualifications, the ideal candidate will have experience teaching at the University level. The successful candidate will have extensive experience in scenic and lighting design with the ability and desire to grow all design areas. The successful candidate will have experience in shop supervision. The ideal candidate will have a broad knowledge of technical theatre and design. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated the ability to inspire students and create a collaborative working atmosphere.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: To perform the job successfully, the following competencies are required for the essential functions of this position:
  • Expertise and experience in scenic and lighting design
  • A broad knowledge of technical theatre and design
  • Knowledge of dramatic literature, history of theatrical production, and beginning directing
  • Knowledge of industry safety regulations and best practices
  • Proficiency in industry-specific software, such as Vectorworks, CAD, and QLab
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively with colleagues, students, staff, and the larger community
  • Strong leadership skills, work ethic, and organizational skills
  • Ability to track budgets effectively/efficiently
  • A commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Basic computing skills
  • Ability to adapt to a changing environment
  • Adept at using online platforms, including university systems and social media
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Instruct all courses in theatre technical and design
  • Instruct other courses as needed by the theatre program
  • Design and implement elements for the production season
  • Mentor student designers
  • May help maintain shop areas and oversee set construction
  • Work with Technical Director to oversee contracted designers and student workers
  • Train and supervise student production crews
  • Participate in advising activities
  • Be active in student recruitment and retention
  • Be active in scholarly and/or creative activities
  • Be active in service to the university, community, and profession
  • Responsible for maintaining a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner to foster teamwork and by providing leadership to subordinates
  • Requires consistent on-time attendance

Additional Information:

Working Relationships: In the typical workday, the successful candidate will interact with the faculty of the Department of Music and Theatre, students in the department, and occasionally faculty across campus. The successful candidate may also work with local theatre educators and the local theatre community.

Special Job Dimensions: Work performed primarily in an office, classroom, and performance space setting. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly exhibits digital dexterity when entering data into a computer, the skills and knowledge necessary for this position, and has good interpersonal skills to work with students, faculty, and staff. The employee is active throughout the day requiring frequent standing. Vision demands may include close, relatively detailed vision when focusing on a computer screen. Employee regularly talks and hears. Employee occasionally lifts items up to 50 pounds. Routine work schedule Monday through Friday, often working nights and weekends.
