About the Opportunity

Summary:

Under the direction of the Director of Housing and Residential Life, the Area Coordinator (AC) position is critical to the development and oversight of residential communities and the creation of a residential community conducive to the social and intellectual growth of our students. ACs are 12-month full-time live-in staff members who are responsible for the overall management of assigned residential areas including supervision of Resident Assistants, supporting Living Learning communities, and serving on departmental committees. ACs are responsible for creating a climate that supports student success, personal development, and high levels of resident engagement. ACs will also support summer assignments related to conferences and events, summer session housing, and new student orientation. Due to the nature of the position, ACs are expected to work outside of traditional business hours including participation in an on-call duty rotation. Responsibilities often extend into weekend and evening/early morning hours.

Responsibilities Include:
  • Establish and maintain a healthy, actively engaged residential community
  • Recruit, train, supervise, coach, and evaluate Resident Assistants and other student staff who work directly with residents to implement programs and provide various levels of support within the residential communities
  • Assist with housing operations as needed
  • Participate in professional staff on-call coverage and duty schedule


Qualifications:

Bachelors required and Master's Degree preferred in College Student Development, Higher Education Administration or related field.
  • Knowledge of residence life operations, student affairs and higher education administration
  • Demonstrated strong administrative, supervisory, and communication skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and effective organizational/planning skills
  • Ability to maintain confidential information
  • Ability to work flexible schedule with on-call duty rotation
  • Ability to operate a personal computer and various software programs
  • Ability to enforce safety policies, practices, procedures and requirements of the department
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse constituencies across campus
  • Ability to remain calm, objective, and work under pressure while handling student and/or staff crisis situations
  • Ability to balance representation of the department, Division of Student Life and Mills Commitment to providing culturally affirming programming to historically marginalized groups including students of color, including Black students, first generation college students, LGBTQIA+/transgender and gender nonconforming populations, students of all abilities and to the College's anti-racism goals.
