Minimum Qualifications
  • Earned doctorate or equivalent terminal degree from an accredited institution and five years of administrative and effective leadership experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Record of achievement in scholarly activity.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, including public presentations.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with a wide range of diverse stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently while communicating salient issues to University leadership.
  • Evidence of effectively developing, implementing, and/or leading faculty or staff diversity and inclusion initiatives and retention activities and/or programming that supports faculty or staff from traditionally underrepresented populations.
  • Experience with effectively aligning and managing fiscal resources to support strategic priorities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Executive Director of the Center of Excellence in Teaching and Learning for Student Success ( CETLSS ) will support Appalachian States’ commitment to Preserve Faculty and Staff Excellence. The Executive Director will provide visionary leadership and develop CETLSS into a national model for innovation and effectiveness in faculty development for student success.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
  • Advance, support, and sustain an inclusive culture of academic excellence.
  • Advance evidence-based teaching and learning, assessment, and evaluation practices across the App State community.
  • Lead and collaborate with key institutional stakeholders to identify and promote best practices surrounding equity-minded, inclusive teaching and the assessment of teaching.
  • Support a multidisciplinary faculty from a broad range of practices to create an equitable learning environment.
  • Meet regularly with the Chief Diversity Officer and other relevant entities to support faculty in meeting the needs of an increasingly diverse student body.
  • Collaborate regularly with senior academic leaders in the Office of the Provost and across divisions.
  • Consult with faculty on aspects of grants related to teaching plans and broader impact strategies.
  • Provide supervision and direction to CETLSS Directors and staff.
  • Develop vision and provide coordination for CETLSS faculty affiliates.
  • Direct, maintain, and evaluate a robust portfolio of programming in faculty development.
  • Direct the curation of, collaboration in, and co-creation of teaching and learning resources for educational enhancement and student success.
  • Present and disseminate information on research-informed best practices in teaching and learning to a wide variety of audiences.
  • Develop programming that amplifies teaching and learning, inclusive pedagogies, and research and scholarship.
  • Coordinate timely and relevant programming with input from faculty and campus leaders.
  • Oversee the staff, budget, and operations of CETLSS .
  • Ensure visibility of CETLSS programming and outreach through social media, websites, and multiple communication platforms.
