POSITION

The Department of American Studies at CSU Fullerton invites applications for its Part-Time Lecturer Pool.

We are seeking experienced, well-organized, and student-centered individuals to teach in the following subject areas:
  • American Studies 201-Introduction to American Studies
  • American Studies 300-Intro to American Popular Culture
  • American Studies 301-American Character
  • American Studies 320-Women in American Society
  • American Studies 324-American Immigration Culture
  • American Studies 345-The American Dream
  • American Studies 395-California Culture

    This is a pool of part-time lecturers for the department to draw on as necessary.

    APPOINTMENTS FROM THE PART-TIME POOL ARE TEMPORARY AND OFTEN MADE JUST PRIOR TO THE START OF THE ACADEMIC TERM. APPLICANTS MUST BE AVAILABLE ON VERY SHORT NOTICE.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Ph.D., ABD or M.A, in American Studies or related field

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    Candidates should demonstrate their ability to interact and work effectively with a wide and culturally diverse range of students, including first-generation college students. Preference will be given to those with experience in fostering a collaborative, supportive and inclusive environment and those with relevant work experience and those who bring professional capabilities.

    APPOINTMENT DATE AND ACADEMIC CALENDAR

    The need for part-time faculty is greatest in Fall and Spring semesters. The Fall term begins in the late August and ends in mid-December; the Spring term runs from the middle of January through the end of May. On rare occasions part-time faculty are needed during one of the Summer Session segments.

    PERFORMANCE EVALUATION

    Regular performance evaluations of part-time lecturers are made by the department in accord with the faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement and University Policy Statement 210.070. These performance evaluations determine which lecturers will be retained for future and continued teaching assignments. And in some instances, syllabi, assignments and reading material will be reviewed by the departmental personnel committee.

    APPOINTMENT AND SALARY

    All part-time faculty appointments are made as Lecturers, under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the CSU system and the California Faculty Association. Initial appointments are for one semester only.

    Classification Range: $4,530 - $6,056 per month
    Anticipated hiring range depending on qualifications, not to exceed $5,405 per month.

    The full-time (15 units per semester) monthly base salaries indicated above are prorated to the number of units worked and are paid in six monthly payments for each full semester. For a three-unit assignment, typical starting compensation ranges from $5,436 to $6,486 per semester.

    The Department:
    American Studies at Cal State Fullerton is an independent department which takes as its primary subject American culture in its historical development. Our courses examine American cultural life in the past and present, always with the aim of helping students better understand their experiences and their society. We study how Americans have thought about and experienced such matters as gender, ethnic, racial, and regional identities, humor, religion, crime and violence, childhood, family, the built environment, community, mental health and sickness, cultural ideals, and cultural criticism.
