Position Summary

This position provides direct and indirect service to the broader Skidmore College community (students, parents, faculty, and staff) in support of the mental health of our student body. Direct student assistance is provided through a mix of individual psychotherapy, skill-building workshops, daytime and after-hours emergency services, and tailored referral assistance. Indirect assistance is provided through outreach programming, mental health trainings, liaison relationships with other campus offices and departments, and daytime and after-hours third-party consultation. Additionally, staff clinicians support larger campus events and initiatives through their participation and direct organizational efforts.

Primary Job Duties

  1. Requires initial assessments with new patients. Assessments include differential DSM-V diagnosis (when appropriate), substance abuse assessment, risk assessment, treatment recommendations and plan. These appointments also require explaining confidentiality parameters and obtaining informed consent for care, and communicating treatment recommendations in clear and understandable language.
  2. Requires conducting single-session and ongoing individual psychotherapy appointments with students suffering from a range of difficulties, from situational and developmental concerns to more severe psychiatric illness. Such therapy will be time-limited and offered within a stepped-care service delivery model.
  3. Requires providing crisis intervention, including same-day emergency appointments in the office, after-hours on-call responsibilities, and additional clinical time as needed. These interventions involve rapid assessment and stabilization, psychiatric hospitalization as needed, involvement with other support systems (family, Residential Life, Campus Safety) as appropriate and with necessary releases of information, and plans for follow-up and post-vention strategies.
  4. Requires conducting multiple skill-building workshop series each semester. These focus on developing adaptive coping mechanisms related to specific mental health concerns (e.g., depression, anxiety, overwhelming emotions, etc.), are delivered in 3-week series, and each series is offered up to 4 times per semester.
  5. Requires close collaboration with the Counseling Center psychiatric consultant, our case management clinician, and with other Skidmore health professionals as needed
  6. Requires frequent clinical consultation with Skidmore faculty, staff, families, and students regarding mental health issues in general, and also regarding specific students of concern, within the ethical and legal parameters of confidentiality.
  7. Requires developing and delivering targeted educational and outreach programming related to mental health issues on campus, including: coping with stress, healthy decision-making, suicide prevention, support services available to students, eating disorders, depression, anxiety, etc.
  8. Requires participation on Skidmore College and Student Affairs initiatives and committees as needed (e.g., position search committees, the task force on international student concerns, the institutional review board (IRB), the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) committee, etc.).
  9. Requires delivery of trainings to Residential Life, Peer Health Educators, and Peer Mentors; mental health outreach to faculty departments and staff offices; and creation of web-based materials to inform the Skidmore community about various mental health concerns and self-help/self-care resources for addressing these.
  10. Requires close collaboration with Health Services, Health Promotion (including SGBM victim advocates), Student Academic Services, and other campus offices charged with student support. In addition, each staff clinician has an assigned liaison role to a specific college support office (e.g., Opportunity Programs, Office of Student Diversity Programs, disability services, etc.) to collaborate regarding particularly vulnerable populations on campus.
  11. Other related duties as assigned by the Director.


Education : Terminal degree in psychology (PhD or PsyD), social work (MSW), or mental health counseling (MA or MS in Counseling).

Experience : At least one year of previous experience in a mental health position, working with a college age population. Ability to achieve independent NYS licensure as a psychologist within one year of hire, or immediate eligibility for NYS licensure as an LCSW, LMSW, or LMHC.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :
  • Requires strong clinical skills, including the ability to conduct rapid assessment, accurate diagnosis, treatment planning, and flexible service delivery in a short-term therapy model.
  • Requires the ability to establish oneself as a person who is expert, trustworthy, and compassionate with students, family, faculty, and staff members who typically are experiencing high levels of distress and concern.
  • Requires knowledge of current standards of practice, professional ethics, NYS mental health law, and best practices in terms of treatment, risk assessment, and management of crisis situations.
  • Requires the ability to function as a highly collaborative and professional colleague, able to interact with other staff members from the Counseling Center and from the larger Skidmore community daily.
  • Requires the ability to communicate effectively across differences with individuals from diverse backgrounds, abilities, and identities.
  • Requires knowledge of, and facility with, electronic medical recordkeeping systems and clinical documentation standards and statutes.
  • Requires strong written and oral communication skills, as well as the ability to set limits and define appropriate boundaries.
  • Requires current knowledge of clinical outcome research.
  • Requires the ability to triage and prioritize tasks, manage time effectively, and consistently meet expected deadlines in a high-volume, fast-paced office environment.
  • Requires the ability to be flexible and to work with a relatively high degree of autonomy, while also complying with communicated expectations, established systems/procedures, and directives.

Pay Range: Commensurate with experience
