The Division of General Internal Medicine in the Department of Medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania seeks candidates for an Associate or Full Professor position in the non-tenure academic clinician track. Applicants must have an M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. degrees and have demonstrated excellent qualifications in clinical care and education. Applicants must be Board Certified in Internal Medicine.

The Section Chief of Hospital Medicine at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center (PPMC) will be responsible for oversight of trainees including residents and medical students on the medicine inpatient teaching and non-teaching services at PPMC. A key element of this position is assuring the delivery of excellent and consistent care across hospital medicine services at PPMC and collaborating with health system leadership in identifying, implementing and evaluating quality improvement efforts. This individual will build on a strong foundation of clinical and educational excellence that currently exists within the Hospital Medicine section at Penn which includes 4 hospitals (HUP, HUP Cedar, GSPP, and PPMC).

The successful candidate will be: clinically active; possess excellent interpersonal skills and mentoring skills; and have significant administrative ability and experience managing physicians and/or advanced practice providers (NP/PA). Experience and facility with a range of clinical scheduling/coverage models and ability to coordinate large groups of providers is essential. The ideal candidate will foster excellent working relationships with nursing and administration and work with the Division Chief and other section leaders to build esprit de corps and a collaborative culture of provider engagement. The selected candidate will work closely with the Division Chief, Division, Department, and Health System leadership to improve and sustain high quality clinical outcomes, maintain high patient satisfaction scores, and improve satisfaction and retention of hospitalist providers.

The Section Chief of Hospital Medicine at PPMC will play a critical role in advancing the clinical and operational missions of the Section in alignment with the Division, Department of Medicine, and University of Pennsylvania Health System (UPHS) strategic priorities. This individual will report directly to the Division Chief with a dotted line to the Chair of the Department of Medicine at PPMC, will receive mentorship and career development from senior officers at PPMC (e.g. CMO and COO level), and will work closely with other leaders in the Section of Hospital Medicine.

  • Experience managing physicians at a multi-site healthcare system preferred

  • Outstanding presentation skills

  • Ability to work in a team environment

  • Demonstration of professional competence and ethical standards that allow the individual to serve as a role model for other faculty, fellows, and resident physicians

  • Academic experience as exhibited through research, educational, quality improvement, or informatics scholarship.

    The academic clinician track requires 100 credits per year of active and high quality teaching responsibilities. Rank will be commensurate with experience.
