Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s in Student Development, Student Personnel, Higher Education, Counseling, or related field.
  • 2 or more years of experience in university career services, counseling, advising, recruiting, human resources, or higher education or equivalent experience.
  • Strong technical proficiency and experience with career-related software, word processing, database, and desktop publishing applications.
  • A demonstrated understanding of career development issues for college students and alumni, and an ability to provide counseling on these issues in individual and group settings.
  • Awareness of trends in health sciences graduate and potential career paths.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for one-on-one and group interaction with various constituencies, including students, faculty, parents, and administrators.
  • Ability to develop and foster strong professional relationships with faculty, staff, and employers.
  • Strong organization, research, planning, and problem-solving skills.
  • Marketing experience and/or the ability to develop and implement effective strategies for promoting and increasing student involvement in office programs and services.
  • Analytical skills required to effectively assess program goals and student learning goals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Assistant Director and Career Coach for the Beaver College of Health Sciences will empower and educate students and alumni by providing comprehensive career development services as they explore majors and careers, obtain internships, apply to graduate and professional schools, and secure employment.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
  • Serve as the career coach and liaison for the Career Development Center to the Beaver College of Health Sciences.
  • Providing career exploration, counseling, and outreach to students, alumni, and faculty.
  • Provide career development and job search counseling to students and alumni in both individual and group settings.
  • Develop a general knowledge and understanding of the programs of study offered in the Beaver College of Health Sciences at Appalachian, and maintain familiarity with the education, training, and career opportunities and expectations of those assigned degree programs.
  • Conduct regular outreach efforts including workshops and presentations to classes, student clubs, and organizations.
  • Disseminate employment and internship opportunities to appropriate faculty, organizations, and students.
  • Work with the Employer Relations team to plan, coordinate and implement employer development activities including employer visitations, on-campus employer engagement opportunities, advisory boards, and on-campus recruiting, and the development of job and internship leads with special attention to students in the Beaver College of Health Sciences.
  • Research, evaluate & maintain online resources for a variety of career issues, academic majors, and career fields.
  • Provide representation in various university committees and university-wide events to enhance awareness and visibility of the Career Development Center.
  • Encourage faculty in the Beaver College of Health Sciences to maintain equitable opportunities for students by posting jobs and internships in Handshake.
  • Provide consultation and organization assistance to departments in the Beaver College of Health Sciences in their development of major specific career related events.
  • Maintain ongoing professional development via involvement with relevant professional associations such as the Southeastern Association of Colleges & Employers (SoACE) and the North Carolina Association of Colleges & Employers ( NCACE ).
  • Collaborate on the development and enhancement of Career Development Center websites and Handshake; integrate technology into daily operations, programs, and presentations.
  • Instruct key faculty in the use of Handshake.
  • Serve as liaison to Athletics.
  • Collaborate with other North Carolina universities to schedule and arrange Health Sciences Professional and Graduate School Fair in the spring.
  • Teach career planning courses as needed.
Suggested Salary Range
Commensurate with experience.
