Position Summary
SUNY Cortland is seeking a dynamic, creative, and engaging Assistant Director in the Disability Resources Office. SUNY Cortland prides itself on being a welcoming community and encourages a wide range of applicants. The Assistant Director is responsible for facilitating access to courses, programs, services, activities, and facilities. The Assistant Director works in collaboration with students and other members of the campus community to develop and implement best practices in promoting inclusive design and determining and providing reasonable accommodations. Applying independent judgment and expertise, the Assistant Director works with students, faculty, staff, and administrators to advance the institutional commitment to disability access and inclusion and improve the accessibility of campus through the delivery of programs and services that reframe disability and promote inclusive design.
Major Responsibilities
- Facilitates students to identify barriers to full participation in curricular and co-curricular environments and determine appropriate accommodations, reviewing additional sources of information as needed
- Manages the interactive process for housing, dining and academic requests leading to the provision of equal access in consultation with students, faculty, staff, and relevant individuals.
- Serves as a subject matter expert by maintaining up-to-date knowledge and understanding of relevant state and federal laws, trends, and best practices in the field of disability services in higher education
- Maintains appropriate records by documenting communication with and regarding students and others who participate in the process of facilitating access and recording recommended courses of action or accommodations
- Participates actively in the continuing development of resources, programs, and activities.
- Plan, facilitate, and assess programming that promotes understanding of the experiences of people with disabilities and ways that environmental and attitudinal barriers get in the way of an inclusive campus climate.
- Engage in disability related programming featuring prospective students and families and accessibility related events on occasional evenings and weekends.
The Assistant Director would report to the Director of Disability Resources and would be in a supervisory role with initiatives such as Student Ambassadors and Graduate Assistant Trainings.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in disability studies, special education, rehabilitation counseling, counseling, or related field
- One-year full-time work experience post-graduation in higher education
- Experience working with individuals with disabilities
- Three years full-time work experience post-graduation in higher education
- Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills
- Demonstrated sensitivity to diverse, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic characteristics of college students
- Working knowledge of adaptive/assistive software, equipment, and applications, including alternate format conversion programs
- Knowledge of physical, cognitive, sensory, and psychological conditions and resulting functional limitations. Experience interpreting psycho-educational evaluations, psychological testing, and/or psychological diagnostic information.
