This leadership, coupled with Carnegie Mellon’s unparalleled ability to work problems at disciplinary boundaries, is enabling us to envision and accelerate the world into the physical and artificial future unlike any other.
Our flagship advanced manufacturing program at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), the Manufacturing Futures Institute (MFI), combines cyber information technologies, manufacturing technologies and social sciences to create a highly collaborative advanced manufacturing research ecosystem that drives the digital transformation of manufacturing, accelerates the translation of associated research discoveries toward commercialization, and advances the methodologies and technologies to enhance the workforce.

MFI at CMU is seeking a highly motivated individual to support the growth of its advanced manufacturing research and education programs at our new 58,000 sq. ft. advanced manufacturing facility, Mill 19 at Hazelwood Green. The partnership of CMU and the Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing (ARM) Institute at Mill19 enables the combined team to engage in efforts that span from basic and applied research to development projects that de-risk technology solutions for direct transition to industry.

The successful candidate will work with MFI staff in a dynamic environment to support the needs of the organization and the advanced manufacturing research projects at Mill 19. The role will interface with MFI partners within Mill 19 (the ARM Institute and Catalyst Connection) plus industry and government partners.

This position with MFI is an outstanding opportunity for someone who thrives in an intellectually stimulating and growth oriented work environment that demands the utmost collaborative spirit and willingness to ensure success of the institute’s mission.

Responsibilities will include:
  • Administrative assistance such as coordinating meeting logistics and resources, maintaining calendars, drafting correspondence, reports, and other documents for supervisor’s signature and/or approval, greeting and directing visitors, checking office supply levels, handling office equipment and supplies, making room reservations and meeting support, arranging departmental social events, responding directly to correspondence and inquiries, assisting with purchasing/accounting functions.

  • Liaison or contact person with other university departments and with outside organizations. Assists in the research, preparation and processing of information.

  • Assist with the workflow within the department. May oversee support staff or student workers through distribution of work and review of work progress. Assists in the training of newly hired staff and students and provides feedback on performance. Recognizes the opportunity for process improvement and participates in the implementation.

  • Maintain calendars to ensure time-critical issues such as annual performance reviews, performance management activities, group meetings, project reviews, etc. are identified and adhered to.

  • Provide general office management by setting up and maintaining complex file systems, and supporting staff and budget related processes and work.

  • Attend various meetings within the department. May serve on inter-departmental committees.

  • Perform related work and special projects as assigned.

Work will take place at Mill 19 (Hazelwood Green). You should be comfortable working collaboratively in a diverse, multi-disciplinary and decentralized environment. Flexibility, excellence, and passion are vital qualities within this role. Further, inclusion, collaboration and cultural sensitivity are valued competencies at Carnegie Mellon. Therefore, we are in search of a team member who is able to effectively inspire and interact with a varied population of internal and external partners at a high level of integrity and professionalism.

Carnegie Mellon Univesity

Carnegie Mellon University challenges the curious and passionate to imagine and deliver work that matters.

A private, global research university, Carnegie Mellon stands among the world's most renowned educational institutions, and sets its own course. Start the journey here.

Over the past 10 years, more than 400 startups linked to CMU have raised more than $7 billion in follow-on funding. Those investment numbers are especially high because of the sheer size of Pittsburgh’s growing autonomous vehicles cluster – including Uber, Aurora, Waymo and Motional – all of which are here because of their strong ties to CMU.

With cutting-edge brain science, path-breaking performances, innovative startups, driverless cars, big data, big ambitions, Nobel and Turing prizes, hands-on learning, and a whole lot of robots, CMU doesn't imagine the future, we create it.

Many seek Pittsburgh for being a hot spot for entrepreneurship and a model for future cities. Others come for the city's burgeoning food scene.
