Job Description

Reporting to the Senior Director of Public Relations, the Director of Public Relations’ responsibilities include researching, writing, and preparing for presidential speaking engagements, creating presentations, developing scripts and messaging for various communication channels such as video recordings, news stories, and written correspondence, managing the president’s web presence, planning and coordinating photography and videography opportunities, and coordinating with Communications and Marketing, Advancement, and other internal and external stakeholders.

Core Responsibilities:
Research, writing, and preparation for speaking engagements.
Website management,
Planning, preparing, and coordinating photo and video opportunities.
Developing scripts and messaging for various communication channels such as video recordings, news stories, and written correspondence.
Coordinate with Communications and Marketing, Advancement, and other internal and external stakeholders. Assist with planning communications and maintaining an events and messaging calendar.
Assist with developing responses relating to specific policies or issues.
Assist with conducting research, collecting, and organizing data as needed.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Master's degree in public relations, communications or related area; or, Bachelor's degree and combination of relevant education & experience equating to an advanced degree.
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Knowledge of state government and higher education.
Considerable professional level writing, editing and communication experience.
Previous experience researching and writing speeches with the ability to organize and present ideas, materials, and concepts creatively.
Superior organizational skills with the ability to keep track of a wide variety of issues and materials while working independently and within deadlines.
Experience effectively working with high-level administrators and government officials. Experience leveraging technology in communications using computer applications including word processing, presentation and web development tools and research tools.
Experience serving as communication professional within higher education setting.
Experience with Virginia Tech CMS system.
Ability to interact in a professional capacity with students, faculty, staff, alumni, legislators, Board members, and other constituents; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Sensitivity to issues of diversity, equity and inclusion.
Ability to work under pressure, on tight deadlines, while maintaining composure.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree preferred.
Virginia Tech organizational knowledge desired.
