Marketing Strategist

The Office of External Affairs encompasses three teams: 1) Communications and Marketing; 2) Development and Constituent Relations and 3) Finance and Administration.

The award-winning Communications and Marketing team provides strategic communications, external and internal communications, and marketing services for the school across a variety of digital, print and physical platforms. This includes brand and identity management, digital strategies and web services, editorial and content strategies, visual communications, media and public relations, social media, and marketing strategies campaigns.

We are seeking a Marketing Strategist who will be reporting to the Director of Audience Development, will lead the development and execution of marketing strategies and campaigns for the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. This position will serve as back up and support to the Director of Audience Development. The Marketing Strategist will lead efforts to generate interest in the school, its 10 departments and academic programs to local, national, and international audiences. In close coordination with our recruitment team and program managers, the primary focus of this position will be prospective student marketing to support enrollment efforts for degree, certificate, and institutional programs. This position will work closely with other members of the Communications and Marketing team to deliver creative, high-quality, cost-efficient marketing campaigns utilizing digital, social media, web, newsletters, and traditional platforms. The Marketing Strategist will oversee marketing on the schools homepage and partner with the Senior Academic Communications Liaison on other content related to academic programs. This position will directly manage the Marketing Specialist role and indirectly manage one to two other positions on the team in partnership with the Director of Audience Development. This position will also manage outside vendor relationships, content creation, media purchases, or other needs related to marketing as determined.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop a marketing vision and actionable marketing plan for School, working closely with the Associate Dean of Communications and Marketing, the Director of Audience Development, and other key leadership across the school, in order to maintain the schools brand presence and position as the #1 School of Public Health.
  • Partner with each of 10 academic departments, the Summer and Winter Institutes, and other high-priority academic programs and the school's admissions and recruitment team, to develop and execute tailored and targeted marketing strategies aimed at measurable conversion goals for applicants and enrolled students.
  • Serve as a consultant to help identify realistic marketing goals, to determine optimal positioning, to determine optimal timeframes of marketing strategies, and to advise on modern marketing practices.
  • Advise on budgets, timing, and phasing for marketing efforts.
  • Advise on approaches to nurturing leads generated by marketing campaigns.
  • Mentor and supervise Marketing Specialist and other supporting roles on the Marketing and Audience Development team to create a seamless marketing plan across traditional and digital media.
  • Work closely with the admissions team to track results and optimize strategies, utilizing and recommending the necessary CRM and tracking tools to do so, and applying learning in new planning.
  • Report to the Director of Audience Development, as well as the Associate Dean of Communications and Marketing, on insights revealed from analytics for marketing campaigns, affiliate websites and partnerships, social media content, etc.
  • Collaborate with the Digital Project Manager and Web Team to update department pages for a unified voice of the website.
  • Conceptualize, create, and monitor the performance of social media content in line with the school's marketing goals, through direction of and collaboration with the Marketing Specialist and Social Media Specialist.
  • Lead marketing promotions, department and program spotlights, and the featured faculty block on the main homepage, in collaboration with the Marketing Specialist and Senior Academic Communications Liaison.
  • Develop and place organic and paid advertisements for Admissions, department heads, etc.
  • Create the annual holiday card and contribute to other communications from the Dean, such as social media posts and public-facing presentations.
  • Partner with other members of the Communications & Marketing team to craft creative campaigns and marketing content, including but not limited to digital media, social media, advertising, conferences and events, partnerships, and print collateral. In collaboration with content strategists, writers, designers, and developers, lead the development of messaging and content, spanning digital, print, graphics, video, social and video and other formats, and platforms as determined. Integrate efforts with other campaigns and content created by the Communications & Marketing team.
  • Develop a bimonthly Coursera newsletter that features text from all of the JHU Schools with Coursera classes.
  • Work with the Communications & Marketing team and the Schools Communications Associates network to maintain accurate engaging digital presence for the school, in furtherance of social media and marketing goals.
  • Work closely with the Communications & Marketing team to develop paid social media and SEO strategies and campaigns, integrated with organic efforts, and to track, analyze and report of results.
  • Develop and execute marketing video campaigns in conjunction with the Video Production Manager.
  • Ensure marketing communicates and displays key branding, positioning, and messaging in promotional communications to key audiences.
  • Support SEO/SEM campaigns by working closely with the Associate Director of Audience Development and Growth and members of the web team. Identify and purchase keywords. Report regularly on the performance of SEO/SEM campaigns.
  • Target and liaise with strategic partnerships and influential individuals/organizations related to audience growth.
  • Identify necessary outside vendors for new and in-need programs, media buying, market research, competitive analysis, and other needs, and oversee vendor relationships and work product.
  • Manage and coordinate marketing meetings with the school's senior leadership and present marketing plans and campaign results.
  • Work with the Associate Dean of Communications and Marketing and the Sr. Financial Analyst to develop and monitor the schools marketing budget and to advise on potential future personnel and non-personnel investments.
  • Liaise with IDARE and CEDC to ensure diversity and other enrollment targets are reflected in social media and marketing planning, implementation, and hiring.
  • Serve as the backup to the Director of Audience Development when they are out of office or unavailable.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in related field.
  • Four years related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelors Degree in marketing/communications.
  • Relevant masters Degree preferred.
  • Five or more years related experience and demonstrated reliability in a professional environment.


Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Must have a strong understanding and implementation experience with marketing principles and current knowledge of specific types of marketing campaigns, across web, digital, graphic, social media and traditional platforms. Demonstrated experience or interest in graduate education and/or public health a plus.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including experience presenting in front of groups.
  • Excellent time-management skills are a must, as is demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines including overseeing team projects.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office products. Experience with Slate CRM and Drupal a plus.
  • Must be able to interact with external vendors effectively working also with the University procurement and proposal processes.
