The Department of Political Science at Norfolk State University offers a B.A. in Political Science as well as a minor. Although the Department is interested in developing new courses, however, currently we offer courses primarily in American Politics, International Relations, Political Theory, Public Administration, Urban Planning, and Pre-Law. The department is particularly interested in candidates who have a demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for all students regardless of their background.
Candidates must include a statement that reflects their commitment to diversity initiatives
and/or experience working with students from underrepresented groups.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
This is a tenure track position at the Associate Professor rank. We are looking for a generalist with a specialization in American Politics. Among others, the successful candidate would be required to develop a course in Civic Engagement at the 100 and 200 levels while engaging in meaningful research. Preference would be given to candidates with capabilities in Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and/or Teaching Politics in the Age of Social Media.
Terms of Appointment
Full-time, tenure track, academic year (nine-month) appointment with a 4/4 teaching load beginning August 2023.
The successful candidate is expected to begin in August 2023, and is responsible for the following:
1. Teach undergraduate courses in American Politics preferably with specialization in one or more of the followings: GIS, Civic Engagement, Social Media
2. Deliver courses online (the university’s platform of choice is Blackboard)
3. Develop new instructional materials, techniques, course offerings or major revisions of existing courses.
4. Actively engage in research/scholarship and grantsmanship
5. Engage in exemplary teaching, both face-to-face and online
6. Devote time to mentoring and advising students throughout their undergraduate years
7. Assist in developing and administering internship opportunities for students with local, state, and national entities, employers, civic engagement groups, activists and interest groups.
8. Develop and attend professional improvement activities in order to maintain contact with one's academic discipline, including teaching/learning processes and/or development of knowledge in one's field of specialization.
9. Collegiality engage with faculty and other members of the university community
10. Demonstrate multicultural competence including an awareness and understanding of
historically disadvantaged populations, and create an educational environment that affirms commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
11. Engage in shared governance by participating in department, division and university committees and assisting in the formulation of policy pertaining to educational programs.

5. Evidence of having established externally funded grants and/or research that is appropriate for
the rank of assistant or associate professor.
