Job Description

The Department of Mathematics and Physics at Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) seeks an Instructional Assistant Professor of Mathematics (10.5-month non-tenure track position) to begin Fall 2023. Primary duties include: (1) teaching 12 semester credit hours (lectures - 3-4cr/course, and labs 2cr/course) per regular semester of introductory lectures and teaching 6 semester credit hours in first summer semester in Mathematics for science majors and non-majors; (2) providing STEM outreach and recruitment; (3) working collaboratively with the math and science faculty modeling high-impact practices such as the facilitation of differentiated instruction; (4) identifying areas of discrepancies in students mathematics and science knowledge to close the gaps in understanding upper-level science courses; and (5) serving on the Academic Recovery and Data Analysis (ARDA) Title V Grant Program team as well as other department, college, and university committees. Additional tasks include preparing and utilizing course syllabi and participating in course assessments using institutional guidelines. We desire candidates who have worked with diverse student populations including first generation and minorities and can adapt teaching to aid students in bottleneck Mathematics courses. Research and publications are encouraged but not required to maintain employment. Initial appointment is for three years, and renewal is based on performance and institutional need. This is a four-year grant-funded position through the ARDA Title V Grant. Future employment may be contingent upon performance and future funding.

Additionally, this position requires teaching STEM Bottleneck courses, conducting outreach, and working with the data analytics team for 10.5 months on a yearly basis. Besides, 9 months major semesters, the selected candidate also teaches during first summer semester up to 6 SCH of courses and work with ARDA team to incorporate analytics into day-to-day operations from faculty and staff across the campus using ARDA analytic tools and assessment products. The candidate upon the appointment will receive training and certifications in Microsoft Power BI and SAS and opportunities to travel to institutional research conferences to be familiar with these tasks.

Required Qualifications:

The successful candidate must hold an earned doctorate degree in Mathematics, or in a closely related discipline. ABDs will also be considered, but applicants must have earned a doctorate before August 2023. Candidates are required to have prior teaching experience in Mathematics. Computer skills including use of excel and learning management systems (e.g., blackboard) are required.

Preferred Qualifications:

We prefer teaching experience with bilingual student populations and/or minority students, service experience in STEM outreach programs, and/or research or teaching experience in mathematics education, especially pertaining to first generation and/or minority challenges in mathematics and/or STEM bottleneck courses. Candidates who have experience in identifying and developing opportunities for community engagement and outreach initiatives are highly sought.
