Special Information

  • This position operates on non standard business hours and requires evenings and/or weekend shifts.
  • This position is an on-site position which requires the incumbent to complete their work primarily at an NAU site, campus, or facility with or without accommodation. Opportunities for remote work are rare.
  • Employees of Facility Services are considered essential staff and must report to work when the university is closed for emergencies. This position is required to participate in on-call, call back duties and snow removal, which can include days, nights, weekends, and holidays. Under established circumstances will respond to emergency dispatch calls within set timeframes in Administrative or Campus Living buildings.


Job Description

Northern Arizona University General Maintenance Shop is now seeking a General Maintenance Mechanic. This position is Full Time (40 hours week) benefit eligible. General Maintenance Mechanics (GMMs) are the front-line responders in Facility Services.

The General Maintenance Mechanic performs maintenance, repairs, and installations on residential and commercial locations including but not limited to general plumbing, electrical, and HVAC equipment. This position also performs moves within the university both residential and commercial utilizing delivery vehicles, dollies, hand-trucks, and other loading equipment. Safety is prioritized when performing tasks and all safety guidelines are expected to be followed as it relates to chemical, electrical, and mechanical procedures.

What types of services can a GMM provide?
  • Minor plumbing repairs of leaks and stoppages in equipment such as faucets, shower valves, hose bibs, sinks, toilets, urinals, flush valves, floor drains and drinking fountains.
  • Repairs and/or installs toilet seats, soap dispensers, hand towel dispensers and towel bars.
  • Minor electric repairs of receptacles, outlets, switches, ballasts, fuses, circuit breakers and exit lighting devices.
  • Minor carpentry repairs on doors, closets, cabinets and stair treads.
  • Installation of new keyboard trays, pencil sharpeners, bulletin boards and whiteboards.
  • Repairs/replaces/installs ceiling tiles, floor tiles and window blinds.

Job Function and Duties of a GMM

Corrective Maintenance - 30%
  • Responding to and repairing reported issues as priority dictates.
  • When issue is outside of scope of General Maintenance, referring and effectively communicating issues to appropriate trades for repair.
  • Complies with all job-specific safety requirements and procedures identified in job-specific hazard assessments (required training, PPE use, standard operation procedures, etc.)
  • Proactively participates in accident prevention efforts and responds to injuries and accidents promptly to modify activities and prevent further accidents.

Preventative Maintenance - 30%
  • Identifying and reporting issues before they become immediate issues effecting use by customers.
  • Repairing identified preventative maintenance issues.

Managing and recording work performance - 10%
  • Utilizing CMMS software to record daily work functions including description of work performed, labor hours, and scope of repair.
  • Referring work orders and creating work orders

Move Requests - 10%
  • Assessing scope of moves
  • Moving furniture, equipment or other items as requested

On-Call Response - 10%
  • Responding to and repairing emergency maintenance issues outside of normal operating hours

Other duties as assigned - 10%

Minimum Qualifications

  • No Educational Requirement
  • One year of general maintenance or repair experience OR
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in commercial and residential type electrical repairs.
  • Demonstrated experience maintaining water softener and water treatment systems.
  • Basic computer application skills including word processing, spreadsheets, and calendaring systems.


Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Knowledge of methods and practices applied in generalized preventive maintenance, repair, remodeling and construction activities.
  • Knowledge of federal and local safety laws, rules and policies governing work activities and safety equipment and national and local building codes and electrical, mechanical and plumbing
  • Knowledge of equipment maintenance/repair techniques
  • Skill in applying equipment maintenance/repair techniques
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to work with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Troubleshooting and mechanical skills.
  • Valid driver's license upon start date.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work occasionally in poor weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or snow.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft office suite


Driving Requirement

Driving a vehicle on behalf of the university is a regular part of this position. Arizona Administrative Code Fleet Safety Policy requires all employees who drive on university business to pass an online defensive driving course and submit their driver's license number for periodic records review. The law applies to all faculty, staff, and students who drive any university-owned motorized vehicles or personally-owned vehicles on University business. A driving record check and completion of required training must be completed before driving occurs on behalf of the university. Background Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. If you are applying for a job that requires a CDL, you will be required to register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse and adhere to the clearinghouse requirements. Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States. Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities. Salary

Salary range begins at $37,584. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

FLSA Status

This position is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The incumbent is eligible for overtime pay or compensatory time according to University policy. Further, the employee must submit timesheets that accurately reflect all hours worked.

This is a Classified Staff (CLS) position.
