Director of Medical Education

The Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU), Office of Medical Education is seeking a full-time Director of Medical Education. The Director of Medical Education reports directly to the senior associate dean for medical education. This position provides oversight of the curriculum management system and all curricular support activities for CMSRU. This highly collaborative position works directly with faculty, staff, administrative leaders, and students to maintain and enhance the medical education program. The Director of Curriculum supervises all Education Coordinators for the medical education program as well as support staff for pre-matriculation programming.

Required Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree required.
  • Minimum of five years of experience at a medical school, or academic medical center, or in the field of Academic Support in higher education, preferably having responsibilities supervising staff in medical education or leading key medical education department initiatives.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office, Canvas (or similar learning management system), curriculum management systems (One45 or similar).
Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD, or EdD preferred in the fields of education, curriculum development, counseling, psychology, health administration or a related field.
  • Experience supervising administrative and professional teams as well as experiencing leading cross-functional groups.
  • Experience in medical education coordination of courses.
  • Experience in the remediation of students facing academic difficulty.
  • Knowledge of USMLE Step Preparation products.
  • Knowledge of adult learning theory, pedagogical approaches and assessment processes.
  • Experience in adult academic counseling or learning support.
  • Experience in learning and remediation in higher education.
  • Experience leading diversified teams or committees related to curriculum and student development or related educational activities.
  • Experience in grant writing, technology-based instruction, and problem-based and team-based learning.
  • Experience in SPSS or similar package.
  • Experience in high level project management activities.
  • Demonstrated competency in decision making, organization and time management skills with a high attention to details.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Strong oral, written and presentation communication skills to various audiences.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively and foster a team environment.
  • Proven ability to work independently and autonomously.
  • Proven experience with Canvas or similar learning management system.
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience.
  • Ability to handle sensitive situations and highly confidential information.
  • Demonstrates excellent faculty, student services skills and customer services skills.
  • Must have experience and demonstrated commitment to working with diverse populations, and the ability to work with a broad range of people including faculty, staff, students, health care professionals, and the general public.
Duties :
  • Provides leadership and operational oversight for the maintenance of the curriculum in the Office of Medical Education.
  • Supervises the Education Coordinators in the Office of Medical Education at CMSRU; develops Education Coordinators and periodically updates job descriptions to reflect current needs.
  • Oversight of design and coordination of academic calendars.
  • Manages and implements programs for USMLE preparation.
  • Works collaboratively with the Office of Assessment.
  • Works to identify students in need of academic support and makes appropriate referrals to learning support.
  • Collaborates with OME leadership to review and adjudicate student grade appeals. Tracks appeals and prepares materials for the Academic Standing Committee.
  • Works collaboratively with the Office of Student Affairs, and other offices in CMSRU.
  • Provides administrative oversight and support for the Student Summer Research Program; works collaboratively with the Department of Biomedical Sciences and Associate Dean for Research to ensure a robust research experience for participating students.
  • Ensures timely completion of activities related to curriculum development for course directors and faculty.
  • Responsible for organizing all curriculum support activities in the Office of Medical Education.
  • Builds rapport and trust with students to ensure confidentiality of services provided to them.
  • Collaborates with faculty and course directors in developing interventions and programs for students experiencing difficulty with course work.
  • Manages an on-line pre-matriculation program to assist all incoming MD students in making a smooth transition to their curriculum.
  • Supervises assignment of and is responsible for tracking student completion of all annual Cooper Learning Network online regulatory requirements (e.g. EPIC, HIPAA, Cooper Safety, Infection Prevention, Occupation and Environmental Hazards).
  • Supervises all aspects of the Urban Medical Education and Development (UMED) CMSRU summer pre-matriculation program.
  • Works collaboratively with the Manager of IT at CMSRU to ensure a quality experience in Canvas and other software products for faculty and students.
  • Drives technology updates in Canvas to keep current with newest features and to continuously improve the student experience.
  • Tracks all components of student academic progress in their coursework, institutional assessments, and the USMLE examinations, and provides needed information to the Academic Standing Committee.
  • Responsible for collection and tracking of exemplary professionalism reports.
  • Maintains confidential documentation.
  • Directs the real time development of the Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE).
  • Prepares, reviews, and interprets data and makes recommendations to the Deans of CMSRU.
  • Supports the annual review of course and clerkships, including mapping, tracking of performance metrics, and follow-up of action items.
  • Creates, collects and maintains data for the medical education program and LCME accreditation reports.
  • Participates in self-studies and other accreditation report writing and development under the direction of the SAD OME.
  • Prepares reports for the Office of Medical Education and outside sources that support medical education.
  • Supports the Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education of CMSRU with design and implementation of processes and procedures to support the work of the OME.
  • Provides administrative support for the Active Learning Group (ALG) Review Subcommittee.
  • Serves on committees as assigned.
  • Participates in professional development activities to keep current in the field of medical education, assessment, evaluation, and research methodologies.
Reporting Relationship :
  • The incumbent in this position reports to the Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education.
  • Incumbent has a collaborative working relationship with the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs.
  • Incumbent has a working relationship with the Assistant Dean for Phase 1, Assistant Dean for Phase 2 and the Assistant Dean for Assessment in the Office of Medical Education.
  • Incumbent must have ability to work in a matrix environment, often collaborating or taking direction from other CMSRU leadership, Rowan University leadership, and Cooper University Health Care leadership.
This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive. As such, the incumbent will perform other duties as assigned by the Dean, Senior or Associate Dean for Medical Education of CMSRU. Work hours are typically between 8AM and 5PM however, as a member of the managerial staff of CMSRU the incumbent must have flexibility to work evening or weekend hours based on office and school needs.
